The Dog In The Sea
The Dog in the Sea, also known as The Dog and the Sailor is a northern European fairy tale classified as ATU 540, "The Dog in the Sea". Description The common plot thread in all variants collected by German scholar Hans-Jörg Uther begins with an unhappy sailor trying to commit suicide by drowning, and meeting a talking dog that offers him help instead. The sailor and his supernatural companion sail together, and after three heavy storms the dog tells the sailor to jump into the water. Underwater the sailor finds a castle and a beautiful woman with magical powers. Warned by the dog, the sailor kills the woman and accomplishes three challenging tasks through three nights in the castle. Afterwards he cuts the dog's head off, and the dog is revealed to be a handsome prince, once enchanted by his mother-in-law/father/a witch, and now returned to human form. Jurjen Van Der Kooi
Jurjen van der Kooi (Hurdegaryp, 22 December 1943 – Drachten, 4 September 2018) was a Dutch university lecturer and folklorist from Frisia. He was widely recognized as an authority in the field of folk tales from Frisia, Northern Netherlands and parts of northern Germany. Life and career Van der Kooi was born in 1943 in Hurdegaryp. He studied literature and until his retirement in 2004 was head lecturer and associate professor of folklore and oral literature at the University of Groningen. In that capacity he was also active as a scientific researcher of folk tales from the Northern Netherlands, Eastern Netherlands and parts of northern Germany. In 1984, he obtained his doctorate cum laude on ''Volksverhalen in Friesland: Lectuur en Mondelinge Overlevering.'' ''Ileana Simziana'' or ''Ileana Sînziana'' (also translated to English as ''The Princess Who Would be a Prince or Iliane of the Golden Tresses'' and ''Helena Goldengarland'') is a Romanian fairy tale collected and written down by Petre Ispirescu between 1872 and 1886. It tells the story of an unnamed youngest daughter of an emperor, who dresses up as a man, goes to serve another emperor and rescues the titular princess Ileana. During a quest of obtaining the Holy Water she is hit by a curse of a monk that causes her to transform into a man - Făt-Frumos (Prince Charming figure), who marries Ileana in the happy ending. The ''Encyclopedia of Fairy Tales'' (''Enzyklopädie des Märchens'') is a German reference work on international Folkloristics, which runs to fifteen volumes and is acknowledged as the most comprehensive work in its field. A water dog is a type of gundog bred to flush and retrieve game from water. Water dogs are considered the progenitors of most modern retriever dog breeds. Description Water dogs are usually medium-sized, active dogs; their most distinctive feature are their tight waterproof coats and their strong desire to swim. Traditionally many long haired water dogs breeds have their coats clipped with a bare midriff and hindquarters to assist in swimming by reducing drag, whilst retaining a long coat around their torso to prevent thermal shock when jumping into freezing water.
