''The Devil Hits Back'' is a compilation album by British rock band Atomic Rooster. Shortly after the death in 1989 of Atomic Rooster founder member Vincent Crane, it was compiled as a tribute by his widow, Jean, and former bandmate John Du Cann. As well as containing a dozen latter-era Atomic Rooster tracks, all its reissues are rounded out by Atomic Rooster's three Beat-Club appearances, dating from 1971 and 1972. Atomic Rooster
Atomic Rooster are a British rock band originally formed by members of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, organist Vincent Crane and drummer Carl Palmer. Throughout their history, keyboardist Vincent Crane was the only constant member and wrote the majority of their material. Their history is defined by two periods: the early-mid-1970s and the early 1980s. The band went through radical style changes, but they are best known for the hard, progressive rock sound of their hit singles, " Tomorrow Night" (UK No. 11) and "Devil's Answer" (UK No. 4), both in 1971. ''Home to Roost'' is a compilation album by British rock band Atomic Rooster. It is made up of material from their first three studio albums. It has been issued on at least three separate occasions. The first time was in 1977, as a double LP on the Mooncrest label. In 1986 it was reissued with a new sleeve design on the Raw Power (Castle Communications) label. This time, the two LPs were accompanied by a 12 track CD release, which was Atomic Rooster's first in that format. Early CDs only had just over one hour's maximum playing time, causing 8 of the 20 tracks to be omitted, in order to facilitate a single disc. ''The Best of Atomic Rooster Volumes 1 & 2'' is a double compilation album by British rock band Atomic Rooster. It is unofficial and unlicensed; like numerous other such collections, it consists mostly of latter-era, John Du Cann-penned recordings. It was, however, made without any involvement from Du Cann, nor has he ever received any royalties from its sales. It is particularly notable for the fact that, besides being more representative of that era than similar compilations, it also contains a quantity of previously unissued recordings, of great interest to keen collectors of the band. It has been issued on at least three separate occasions; the first time was in 1992 on Saraja Records, a subsidiary of Satellite Music Ltd. Satellite Music is owned by Ray Dorset, of Mungo Jerry fame. Vincent Crane
Vincent Rodney Cheesman (21 May 194314 February 1989), known professionally as Vincent Crane, was an English keyboardist, best known as the organist for the Crazy World of Arthur Brown and Atomic Rooster. Crane co-wrote "Fire", the 1968 hit single by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Biography Born Vincent Rodney Cheesman in Reading, Berkshire, he taught himself boogie woogie piano as a teenager before attending Trinity College of Music between 1961 and 1964. Influenced by Graham Bond, he took up Hammond organ. In late 1966 he formed the Vincent Crane Combo, which comprised bass player Binky McKenzie, sax player John Claydon and drummer Gordon Hadler. In 1967 he teamed up with Arthur Brown in the Crazy World of Arthur Brown. John Du Cann
John William Cann (2 June 1946 – 21 September 2011), later known by his stage name John Du Cann, was an English guitarist primarily known through his work in the 1970s band Atomic Rooster. Life and career His early bands included the Wiltshire-based The Sonics (not to be confused with the 1960s US band of the same name) and London-based The Attack, which released "Hi Ho Silver Lining" a few days prior to Jeff Beck. He went on to lead a psychedelic, progressive, hard rock band called Andromeda, before being asked to join Atomic Rooster, when bass player and vocalist Nick Graham left the band. Cann overdubbed guitar parts and replaced Graham's vocals on three tracks of their 1970 self-titled debut album, and a second pressing featuring the overdubbed tracks was soon issued, though without crediting him on the sleeve. ''Beat-Club'' is a West German music programme that ran from September 1965 to December 1972. It was broadcast from Bremen, West Germany on ''Erstes Deutsches Fernsehen'', the national public TV channel of the ARD, and produced by one of its members, Radio Bremen, later co-produced by WDR following the 38th episode. History ''Beat-Club'' was co-created by Gerhard Augustin and Mike Leckebusch. The show premiered on 25 September 1965 with Augustin and Uschi Nerke hosting.
