The Deb
''The Deb'' is a musical by Hannah Reilly with music by Megan Washington and lyrics by Washington & Reilly. Premise ''The Deb'' concerns high school outcast Taylah, her feminist inner-city cousin Maeve and the annual debutante ball in the fictional drought-stricken country town of Dunburn, Australia. Reilly describes it as "a love letter to awkward teenage adolescence and learning how to celebrate what makes you unique”. Production The original Australian Theatre for Young People production was staged from 8 April to 22 May 2022 at ATYP's The Rebel Theatre in Sydney's Walsh Bay Wharves Precinct. It was co-directed by Reilly and Fraser Corfield with choreographer Sally Dashwood and music director Zara Stanton. The cast included Katelin Koprivec (Taylah), Charlotte MacInnes (Maeve), Jay Laga’aia and Tara Morice. Reception ''The Deb'' was positively received. Megan Alexanda Washington (born 7 January 1986) is an Australian musician and songwriter who has worked mononymously as Washington. Originally performing jazz music, her style shifted to indie pop and alternative rock. A debutante ball, sometimes called a coming-out party, is a formal ball that includes presenting debutantes during the season, usually during the spring or summer. Debutante balls may require prior instruction in social etiquette and appropriate morals. The dress code is white tie and tails for men, and strictly floor-length pure white ball gown for women. Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) is a not-for-profit national youth theatre company located in Woolloomooloo, New South Wales, Australia. It was founded in 1964 by Eleanor Witcombe. History The first committee was formed in 1964 and consisted of Alastair Duncan as chairman, Diana Sharpe as secretary, Nigel Lovell as treasurer as well as Ellis Irving, Owen Weingott and Wendy Blacklock. The Walsh Bay Wharves Precinct, also known as the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, is a heritage-listed former wharf precinct, now converted to hospitality and entertainment purposes, at Hickson Road, in the inner city Sydney suburb of Millers Point in the City of Sydney local government area of New South Wales, Australia.
