The Daughter Of Iorio
''The Daughter of Iorio'' () is a 1904 play by the Italian writer Gabriele D'Annunzio. The play is written in verse and has elements of local dialect, proverbs and traditional rhymes from Abruzzo. It tells the tragic story of the love between a young female outcast and a shepherd who is being married off to a woman he does not love. The play was written in 33 days in the summer of 1903, while D'Annunzio was working on ''Halcyon''. It premiered in 1904 at the Teatro Lirico in Milan, starring Irma Grammatica in the leading role. It was well received and has remained one of D'Annunzio's most performed plays. Adaptations The play was the basis for Alberto Franchetti's 1906 opera ''La figlia di Iorio''. Halcyon (book)
''Halcyon'' ( it, Alcyone ) is the title of a collection of 88 poems by Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, written between 1899 and 1903, and published in 1903. It was intended as the third volume of a seven-book work called ("''Odes to the sky, to the sea, to the earth and to the heroes''") which was subsequently interrupted in 1912 with only four volumes published: ''Maia'', ''Elettra'', ''Halcyon'', and ''Merope''. Origin On July 7, 1899, D'Annunzio wrote to his editor Treves about a long and complex lyrical work he was developing. Teatro Lirico (Milan)
The Teatro Lirico (known until 1894 as the Teatro alla Canobbiana) is a theatre in Milan, Italy. In the 19th and early 20th centuries it hosted numerous opera performances, including the world premieres of Donizetti's '' L'elisir d'amore'' and Giordano's '' Fedora''. The theatre, located on Via Rastrelli, closed in 1998. However, a restoration project was begun in April 2007, and it has finally re-opened in December 2021 as the Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber. Alberto Franchetti
Alberto Franchetti (18 September 1860 – 4 August 1942) was an Italian composer, best known for the 1902 opera ''Germania''. Biography Alberto Franchetti was born in Turin, a Jewish nobleman of independent means. He studied first in Venice, then at the Munich Conservatory under Josef Rheinberger, and finally in Dresden under Felix Draeseke. His first major success occurred in 1888 with his opera ''Asrael''. His operatic style combined Wagnerianism and the traits of Meyerbeer with Italian verismo. During his life, critics sometimes referred to him as the "Meyerbeer of modern Italy." The words of music critic G. B. ''La figlia di Iorio'' (''The Daughter of Iorio''), sometimes written as ''La figlia di Jorio'', is an opera in three acts by Alberto Franchetti to a libretto by Gabriele D'Annunzio. The libretto is a very close rendering of D'Annunzio's play of the same name. ''La figlia di Iorio'' premiered at La Scala on 29 March 1906, conducted by Leopoldo Mugnone. Ildebrando Pizzetti (20 September 1880 – 13 February 1968) was an Italian composer of classical music, Musicology, musicologist, and Music criticism, music critic. Biography Pizzetti was born in Parma in 1880. He was part of the "Generation of 1880" along with Ottorino Respighi, Gian Francesco Malipiero, and Alfredo Casella. They were among the first Italian composers in some time whose primary contributions were not in opera. The instrumental and ''a cappella'' traditions had never died in Italian music and had produced, for instance, the string quartets of Antonio Scontrino (1850–1922) and the works of Respighi's teacher Giuseppe Martucci; but with the "Generation of 1880" these traditions became stronger.
