The Crusade (Doctor Who)
''The Crusade'' is the sixth serial of the second season in the British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. Written by David Whitaker and directed by Douglas Camfield, the serial was broadcast on BBC1 in four weekly parts from 27 March to 17 April 1965. In this serial, the First Doctor (William Hartnell) and his travelling companions Ian Chesterton ( William Russell), Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill), and Vicki (Maureen O'Brien) arrive in 12th century Palestine during the Third Crusade, and find themselves entangled in the conflict between King Richard the Lionheart (Julian Glover) and Saladin (Bernard Kay). Crusades (Doctor Who)
The Crusades were a series of religious wars initiated, supported, and sometimes directed by the Latin Church in the medieval period. The best known of these Crusades are those to the Holy Land in the period between 1095 and 1291 that were intended to recover Jerusalem and its surrounding area from Islamic rule. Beginning with the First Crusade, which resulted in the recovery of Jerusalem in 1099, dozens of Crusades were fought, providing a focal point of European history for centuries. In 1095, Pope Urban II proclaimed the First Crusade at the Council of Clermont. Tony Caunter
Anthony Patrick Caunter (born 22 September 1937) is a Retired British actor best known for his role as Jack Shepherd in the Yorkshire TV sitcom '' Queenie's Castle'' and also his portrayal of Roy Evans in ''EastEnders'' from 1994 to 2003. The second son of Annie Mary and Roy Hobert Caunter, Caunter attended Worthing and Westcliff High Schools, before service in the RAF and training as an actor at LAMDA. David Whitaker (screenwriter)
David Arthur Whitaker (18 April 1928 – 4 February 1980) was an English television writer and novelist who worked on the early years of the science-fiction TV series ''Doctor Who''. He served as the programme's first story editor, supervising the writing of its first 51 episodes from 1963 to 1964. Career Prior to joining the BBC, Whitaker worked as a writer, actor and director with the York Repertory Group. A play he wrote for them, 'A Choice of Partners' (1957), gained the attention of the BBC's script department. They commissioned Whitaker to work on the programmes Garry Halliday (1962) and the long-running Compact (1962). Douglas Camfield
Douglas Gaston Sydney Camfield (8 May 1931 – 27 January 1984) was a British television director, active from the 1960s to the 1980s. Early life Camfield studied at the York School of Art and aimed to work for The Walt Disney Company. He was commissioned into the Royal Army Service Corps in 1951 during his national service. Later that year, he transferred to the West Yorkshire Regiment ( Territorial Army). He was promoted to lieutenant in 1952 and was training to be in the Special Air Service, but due to an injury he pulled out of the application process. It has often been noted by those who worked with him that Camfield always retained an affection for the army and brought military standards of organisation to the programmes he subsequently directed. Valentino Musetti (born 7 January 1943 in Pontremoli, Tuscany, Italy), often known as just Val Musetti, is an Italian-born English film and TV stuntman and retired motor racing driver. Highlights of his career include finishing third in the Shellsport International Series in 1977. In 1978 he finished fifth in the Aurora F1 Championship. In the late 1980s he drove in the FIA World Sportscar Championship. He competed in one round of the 1991 British Touring Car Championship at Donington Park. Derek Ware (actor)
Derek Arthur Ware (27 February 1938 – 22 September 2015) was an English actor and stuntman, active from the late 1950s through the 1990s. Ware's parents were Arthur, a music hall performer, and his wife Margaret. After graduating from RADA in 1957, his earliest television work was on the BBC's cycle of Shakespeare's history plays, ''An Age of Kings'' (1960), as both actor and stunt arranger. For the director Peter Watkins, Ware was involved in the production of the docudramas, '' Culloden'' (1964) and ''The War Game'' (1966), both for the BBC. Ware was a stuntman and fight arranger for the early seasons of ''Doctor Who'' on which his company Havoc, founded in 1966, was involved as well as many other television shows into the 1970s, for both the BBC and ITV. Tutte Lemkow (born Isak Samuel Lemkow; 28 August 1918 – 10 November 1991) was a Norwegian actor and dancer, who played mostly villainous roles in British television and films. Robert Lankesheer (1914–1993) was a British stage, radio and television actor, best known for playing the character Leamington Sparr in the radio soap ''The Dales'' between 1963 and 1966 and Chamberlain in the television series '' Doctor Who'' in 1965. Robert de Beaumont, 4th Earl of Leicester (died circa 21 October 1204) ( Latinized to ''de Bellomonte'' ("from the beautiful mountain")) was an English nobleman, the last of the Beaumont earls of Leicester. John Marshall Bay (November 30, 1928 – November 7, 1982) was an American actor and playwright. Personal Bay was born in Chicago, the location of his family's company, Bays English Muffins. He was married to the actress Elaine Stritch for nine years until his death from brain cancer in 1982.
