The Crimson Palm
''The Crimson Palm'' (血手印, pinyin: ''Xie shou yin'', Cantonese: ''Huet sau yan'') is a 1964 Hong Kong film directed by Chan Yau-San for Shaw Brothers. Plot The father of Lin Shao-teh, a high court official, has betrothed him to the daughter of millionaire Wang Chun. Lin's father dies and the Lin family is impoverished. Lin Shao-teh Ivy Ling Po has to work as a water carrier to support his mother. Wang Chun calls Shao-teh to his house, forces him to annul the betrothal in exchange for some silver. Shao-teh is deeply hurt, agrees to the annulment, but refuses the money. Wang Chun's daughter, Chien-king (Chin Ping), is a virtuous girl. When she hears about what her father has done, she refuses to obey him and vows to not marry anyone else. Chien-king sends her maid, Shuet Chun (Li Ching), to Shao-teh's house to console him. Huang Yu-chun (born 16 November 1939 in Shantou, Republic of China (1912–49), Republic of China), known by her final stage name Ivy Ling Po, is a retired Hong Kong actress and Chinese opera singer. She is best known for a number of mega-hit Huangmei opera films in the 1960s, especially ''The Love Eterne'' (1963) which made her an Asian superstar overnight. She played an important role in the entertainment industry for preserving the Huangmei opera art form. Bao Zheng
Bao Zheng (; 5 March 999 – 3 July 1062), commonly known as Bao Gong (), was a Chinese politician during the reign of Emperor Renzong in China's Song Dynasty. During his twenty-five years in civil service, Bao consistently demonstrated extreme honesty and uprightness, with actions such as sentencing his own uncle, impeaching an uncle of Emperor Renzong's favourite concubine and punishing powerful families. His appointment from 1057 to 1058 as the prefect of Song's capital Kaifeng, where he initiated a number of changes to better hear the grievances of the people, made him a legendary figure. During his years in office, he gained the honorific title Justice Bao () due to his ability to defend peasants and commoners against corruption or injustice. Bao Zheng today is honored as the cultural symbol of justice in Chinese society. Shaw Brothers (HK) Ltd. () was the largest film production company in Hong Kong, and operated from 1925 to 2011. In 1925, three Shaw brothers— Runje, Runme, and Runde—founded Tianyi Film Company (also called "Unique") in Shanghai, and established a film distribution base in Singapore, where Runme and their youngest brother, Run Run Shaw, managed the precursor to the parent company, Shaw Organisation.
