Manuel Guimarães
Manuel Guimarães (1915–1975) was a Portuguese filmmaker. Biography In 1931, Guimarães studied painting in the School of Fine Arts in Oporto. Started to work in 1936 as a theater scenographer, illustrator and cartoonist. Film poster designer, became interested in cinematic art, and started to as assistant of directors as Manoel de Oliveira, António Lopes Ribeiro, Jorge Brum do Canto, Arthur Duarte and Armando de Miranda. Directed, in 1949, the short documentary ''O Desterrado'', a film about the life and craft of the Portuguese sculptor Soares dos Reis. '' Saltimbancos'' is his first feature-film, is an adaptation of the novel ''Circo (Circus)'' of the writer Leão Penedo, which is centered in the life of a small travelling circus. Meanwhile, Guimarães worked in advertising in Metro Goldwyn-Mayer. Barbara Laage
Barbara Laage (30 July 1920 – 21 May 1988) was a French film actress who flourished in the 1950s. After fleeing Paris with her family during the German occupation in World War II, Laage returned to the city after the war and commenced her acting career in the Paris theatre district of Montparnasse. Her first move to Hollywood was arranged by theatrical agent William Morris, founder of the William Morris Agency. She is one of several Hollywood stars of the era that would frequent the Chateau Marmont. Glicínia Quartin (1924 2006) was a Portuguese stage, film and television actor who received several awards for her performances. Early life and training Glicínia Vieira Quartin was born on 19 December 1924, in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. She was the daughter of the radical teacher, freemason and feminist Deolinda Lopes Vieira and of the anarchist intellectual, António Pinto Quartin. At home, she was exposed to the friends of her parents who were journalists, writers, teachers and members of the feminist movement, such as Maria Lamas and Ana de Castro Osório. Quartin married at the age of 21, against her parents' wishes. Initially studying agronomy for a year, she then transferred to the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, graduating in 1954 in biological sciences, while also studying nutrition.
