Manuel Guimarães
Manuel Guimarães (1915–1975) was a Portuguese filmmaker. Biography In 1931, Guimarães studied painting in the School of Fine Arts in Oporto. Started to work in 1936 as a theater scenographer, illustrator and cartoonist. Film poster designer, became interested in cinematic art, and started to as assistant of directors as Manoel de Oliveira, António Lopes Ribeiro, Jorge Brum do Canto, Arthur Duarte and Armando de Miranda. Directed, in 1949, the short documentary ''O Desterrado'', a film about the life and craft of the Portuguese sculptor Soares dos Reis. '' Saltimbancos'' is his first feature-film, is an adaptation of the novel ''Circo (Circus)'' of the writer Leão Penedo, which is centered in the life of a small travelling circus. Albergaria-a-Velha
Albergaria-a-Velha () is a town and a Municipalities of Portugal, municipality in the Aveiro District in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 25,252, in an area of 158.83 km². It had 19,687 eligible voters in 2006. History In 1117, Theresa, Countess of Portugal, D. Teresa, Countess of Portucale, and mother of Afonso Henriques the first king of Portugal, donated to the nobleman Gonçalo Eriz the lands that constitute Albergaria-a-Velha. As part of the donation the nobleman was obligated to maintain open a hospice for poor travels. The document referred to this shelter for the travelling poor, or ''albergaria'', and thus the area was known as ''Albergaria''. Later, the ''Carta do Couto de Osselôa'' was discovered that definitely identified both the first document to refer to Portugal as a ''monarchy, Kingdom'' and at the same figured in the identification of Albergaria-a-Velha as an administrative unit of the country. Alves Redol
António Alves Redol (29December 191129November 1969) was an influential Portuguese neorealist writer. Life Redol was born in 1911 in Vila Franca de Xira to Antonio Redol da Cruz, a shopkeeper, and Inocência Alves Redol. When he was fifteen, his articles were published in the local weekly newspaper, . After finishing secondary school in 1927, he traveled to Portuguese Angola where he stayed for three years. His stay in Angola influenced Redol's worldview and later literature. In 1936, he married Maria dos Santos Mota. Early work, 1930–1940 Redol published stories in the newspapers and in which he identified with the opposition to the Estado Novo. Fernando Namora
Fernando Namora (15 April 1919 – 31 January 1989), with the full name Fernando Gonçalves Namora was a Portuguese writer and medical doctor. Namora was born in Condeixa-a-Nova, Coimbra District and died in Lisbon, Portugal. He received his medical degree at 1942, by the University of Coimbra. Those years as student would have influenced him as a man (and writer) as well his experience as a country doctor, in remote regions as Beira Baixa and Alentejo, till the year of 1950, when he moved to Lisbon, invited to be medical assistant at the Instituto Português de Oncologia. Bernardo Santareno
Bernardo Santareno is the pseudonym of António Martinho do Rosário (November 19, 1920 – August 20, 1980), a Portuguese writer. Life He was born in 1920, in Santarém, Ribatejo, to Maria Ventura Lavareda and Joaquim Martinho do Rosário. He completed highschool in Santarém, at Liceu Nacional de Sá da Bandeira, in 1939. Graduated in Psychiatry from Universidade de Coimbra in 1950. Died aged 59 in Oeiras. In 1957/58 worked as an on-board physician in the Portuguese cod fishing fleet, an experience that inspired, among other writings, his sole prose effort. His left-wing stance often put him at odds with the Estado Novo dictatorship.
