The Common Link
TCL, The Common Link, was a Swedish bulletin board system, BBS system developed by Ulf Hedlund in the late 1980s. It was based on the capabilities of the KOM (BBS), KOM conferencing system used at many Swedish universities, and distinguished itself from the other major FidoNet BBS systems at the time by its support for topic threading and its non-hierarchical command interface. It used a Btrieve database for information storage. There were only about 30 TCL BBSs in Sweden and only one outside the country. Bulletin Board System
A bulletin board system (BBS), also called computer bulletin board service (CBBS), is a computer server running software that allows users to connect to the system using a terminal program. Once logged in, the user can perform functions such as uploading and downloading software and data, reading news and bulletins, and exchanging messages with other users through public message boards and sometimes via direct chatting. In the early 1980s, message networks such as FidoNet were developed to provide services such as NetMail, which is similar to internet-based email. Many BBSes also offer online games in which users can compete with each other. BBSes with multiple phone lines often provide chat rooms, allowing users to interact with each other. Bulletin board systems were in many ways a precursor to the modern form of the World Wide Web, social networks, and other aspects of the Internet. KOM (BBS)
KOM is a type of BBS, with a text-based (as opposed to a menu based) input system. The first was QZ KOM, but soon others imitated the user interface. The QZKOM system was first opened in 1978, which probably makes it the first Swedish-developed forum service. It was banned by the Swedish government late the same year, reopened with permission in 1979. Before the introduction of QZKOM, QZ ran the American system Forum-Planet which provided similar services but only for very small user groups. One of the larger KOM systems outside QZ was Permobas, which was sponsored by Permobil. The first version ran on two (later seven) ABC80 with 300 bit/s modems connected to a 5 or 10 MB hard disk. One of the Permobas users was Henrik Schyffert. Schyffert later started his own BBS named "Ring så spelar vi". Btrieve
Btrieve is a transactional database (navigational database) software product. It is based on Indexed Sequential Access Method (ISAM), which is a way of storing data for fast retrieval. There have been several versions of the product for DOS, Linux, older versions of Microsoft Windows, 32-bit IBM OS/2 and for Novell NetWare. It was originally a record manager published by SoftCraft. Btrieve was written by Doug Woodward and Nancy Woodward and initial funding was provided in part by Doug's brother Loyd Woodward. Around the same time as the release of the first IBM PCs, Doug received 50% of the company as a wedding gift and later purchased the remainder from his brother. After gaining market share and popularity, it was acquired from Doug and Nancy Woodward by Novell in 1987, for integration into their NetWare operating system in addition to continuing with the DOS version.
