KOM (BBS)
KOM is a type of BBS, with a text-based (as opposed to a menu based) input system. The first was QZ KOM, but soon others imitated the user interface. The QZKOM system was first opened in 1978, which probably makes it the first Swedish-developed forum service. It was banned by the Swedish government late the same year, reopened with permission in 1979. Before the introduction of QZKOM, QZ ran the American system Forum-Planet which provided similar services but only for very small user groups. One of the larger KOM systems outside QZ was Permobas, which was sponsored by Permobil. The first version ran on two (later seven) ABC80 with 300 bit/s modems connected to a 5 or 10 MB hard disk. One of the Permobas users was Henrik Schyffert. Schyffert later started his own BBS named "Ring så spelar vi". Bulletin Board System
A bulletin board system (BBS), also called computer bulletin board service (CBBS), is a computer server running software that allows users to connect to the system using a terminal program. Once logged in, the user can perform functions such as uploading and downloading software and data, reading news and bulletins, and exchanging messages with other users through public message boards and sometimes via direct chatting. In the early 1980s, message networks such as FidoNet were developed to provide services such as NetMail, which is similar to internet-based email. Many BBSes also offer online games in which users can compete with each other. BBSes with multiple phone lines often provide chat rooms, allowing users to interact with each other. The Common Link
TCL, The Common Link, was a Swedish bulletin board system, BBS system developed by Ulf Hedlund in the late 1980s. It was based on the capabilities of the KOM (BBS), KOM conferencing system used at many Swedish universities, and distinguished itself from the other major FidoNet BBS systems at the time by its support for topic threading and its non-hierarchical command interface. It used a Btrieve database for information storage. There were only about 30 TCL BBSs in Sweden and only one outside the country. In computing, text-based user interfaces (TUI) (alternately terminal user interfaces, to reflect a dependence upon the properties of computer terminals and not just text), is a retronym describing a type of user interface (UI) common as an early form of human–computer interaction, before the advent of modern conventional graphical user interfaces (GUIs). Like GUIs, they may use the entire screen area and accept mouse and other inputs. LysKOM
LysKOM is a KOM-based conferencing system developed by the Lysator Academic Computer Society at Linköping University and Linköping Institute of Technology. It can be seen as a cross between news and e-mail, but with the presence and speed of IRC or IM-networks. The most common client is the LysKOM Emacs Lisp Client, but among others a WWW-based client also exists. The server and most clients are released under the terms of the GNU General Public License, and thus free software. The LysKOM protocol uses port 4894. Protocol implementations exist for Python, Perl and Pike. Based on these frameworks, a number of programs for bridging LysKOM with other systems have been written. Notable among these is the Python software for importing and exporting e-mail. Used as a whole, it enables the LysKOM system to act as a primitive list manager.
