The Cloth Peddler (1945 Film)
''The Cloth Peddler'' ( az, Arşın Mal Alan) is a 1945 Azerbaijani romantic comedy musical film made in Baku, based on the operetta '' Arshin Mal Alan'' by the famous Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov. Plot Set in Baku at the turn of the 20th century, a young successful businessman Asgar (Rashid Behbudov) wishes to marry. He wants his bride to be the choice of his heart, but Azerbaijani tradition restricted him from communicating with the lady as a lover before marriage. So he decides to disguise himself as a mere cloth peddler and the young woman, Gulchoehra ( Leyla Badirbayli,) falls in love with him. However, she is concerned that her father, Soltan bey ( Alakbar Huseynzade) will not allow her to marry a cloth peddler. Young Asgar then reveals himself to her father and asks for her hand in marriage. Seeing that he is indeed a wealthy young man, the father agrees and the two are permitted to marry. Rza Abbasgulu oglu Tahmasib ( az, Rza Təhmasib; 20 April 1894, Nakhchivan City – 14 February 1980, Baku) was an Azerbaijani film director and actor. He also worked as a professor of theatre, and translator of play scripts from Russian into Azeri. Early life Tahmasib was born as Rza Tahmasibbeyov to a wealthy merchant family, he was born on 20 April 1894 in Nakhchivan City, Russian Empire. He received his primary education at Maktab-i Tarbiyya school in Nakhchivan, where he learned Russian, Persian and Arabic languages. He continued his education at a three-year Russian school in his hometown. His interest to theatre was invoked by actor Huseyn Arablinski who was touring Nakhchivan with his troupe in 1907. Rahila Mustafayeva
Rahila ( IAST: Rāhila, reigned c. 885-905 CE) was a king of the Chandela dynasty of India. He ruled in the Jejakabhukti region ( Bundelkhand in present-day Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh). Rahila was the son of his predecessor Vijayashakti. R. K. Dikshit dates his reign approximately to 885-905 CE. In an inscription of one of his successors, his title is given as ''nṛpati'' ("Lord of men"). No royal titles have been assigned to him, which suggests that he was a subordinate to the Pratiharas, like other early Chandela rulers. Not much is known about Rahila's military career. He is mentioned in two Khajuraho inscriptions of his successors. These eulogistic inscriptions praise him as a warrior, but do not provide much information of historical value. For example, the 954 CE Khajuraho inscription states that he gave enemies sleepless nights. ''If Not That One, Then This One'' (; ), also known as ''Mashadi Ibad'' (; ) is a 1910 Azerbaijani operetta in four acts written by composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov. The comedy reflects social and everyday life relations in prerevolutionary Azerbaijan. It is the composer's second work written in this genre, and is considered a national classic alongside the same composer's '' Arshin mal alan''. History Hajibeyov's second musical comedy was written in 1910, initially it was in three acts. After 1915, when an additional scene was written, it was recast in four acts. Hajibeyov used the Azerbaijani musical style mugam in some of the music and incorporated extracts from Fuzûlî's ghazals in the libretto.
