The Cats, previously known as The Hustlin' Kind, were a ska ensemble from Mile End, London.de Koningh, Michael & Griffiths, Marc (2003) ''Tighten Up! The History of Reggae in the UK'', Sanctuary, , pp. 37-38 The group's lineup comprised Tyrone Patterson (keyboards), Richard Archer (bass), John Kpiaye (guitar), and Michael Okoro (drums). History They were initially an instrumental band, playing ska and soul covers in London clubs, changing the band name to The Cats in Summer 1968. The group recorded ten tracks at Maximum Sound studios in Old Kent Road in September 1968. Their 1968 single, "Swan Lake", backed by " Swing Low", hit no. 48 in the UK Singles Chart in early 1969, making them the first British reggae band to have a top fifty hit in the UK. According to Kpiaye "Swan Lake" was recorded during the Maximum Sound session, the single was released on the group's own Baf label. Mile End
Mile End is a district of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in the East End of London, England, east-northeast of Charing Cross. Situated on the London-to-Colchester road, it was one of the earliest suburbs of London. It became part of the metropolitan area in 1855, and is connected to the London Underground. It was also known as Mile End Old Town; the name provides a geographical distinction from the unconnected former hamlet called Mile End New Town. In 2011, Mile End had a population of 28,544. William Tell Overture
The ''William Tell'' Overture is the overture to the opera ''William Tell'' (original French title ''Guillaume Tell''), whose music was composed by Gioachino Rossini. ''William Tell'' premiered in 1829 and was the last of Rossini's 39 operas, after which he went into semi-retirement (he continued to compose cantatas, sacred music and secular vocal music). The overture is in four parts, each following without pause. There has been repeated use (and sometimes parody) of parts of this overture in both classical music and popular media. It was the theme music for ''The Lone Ranger'' in radio, television and film, and has become widely associated with horseback riding since then. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot
"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" is an African-American spiritual song and one of the best-known Christian hymns. Originating in early oral and musical African-American traditions, the date it was composed is unknown. Performances by the Hampton Singers and the Fisk Jubilee Singers brought the song to the attention of wider audiences in the late 19th century. J. B. T. Marsh includes an early version of text and tune in his 1876 publication ''The Story of the Jubilee Singers, with their Songs''. The earliest known recording of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" was recorded in 1894, by the Standard Quartette. The song uses the theme of death to remind the audience of the glory that awaits in Heaven, when Christians believe they will transcend the earthly world of suffering and come to rest in their final home. A one-hit wonder or viral hit is any entity that achieves mainstream popularity, often for only one piece of work, and becomes known among the general public solely for that momentary success. The term is most commonly used in regard to music performers with only one hit single that overshadows their other work.
