The ''Canby Herald'' is a weekly paper published in Canby, Oregon, Canby, Oregon, United States, since 1906, and covering the cities of Canby and Aurora, Oregon, Aurora. As of 2014, the paper is published on Wednesdays. The paper was previously (as of 2012) published bi-weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but sharing content with the ''Woodburn Independent'' in its Saturday edition. In January 2013, the paper was sold to the Pamplin Media Group along with five other papers owned by Eagle Newspapers (Oregon), Eagle Newspapers. It is one of the state's oldest newspapers. Canby, Oregon
Canby is a city in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 15,829 at the 2010 census. It is along Oregon Route 99E, northeast of Barlow. History Canby is named for Edward Richard Sprigg Canby, a Civil War general who was later killed in the Modoc War by Captain Jack and his group of warriors. The area was known as Baker Prairie when the community was founded in 1857. Canby was platted in 1870. Canby was incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on February 15, 1893. In May 2016, Canby was featured on the ABC newsmagazine ''20/20'', when the local "Canby Psychic" was part of an investigation into the swindling of a local rancher out of $15 million. Aurora is a city in Marion County, Oregon, United States. Before being incorporated as a city, it was the location of the Aurora Colony, a religious commune founded in 1856 by William Keil and John E. Schmit. William named the settlement after his daughter. The ''Woodburn Independent'' is a weekly paper published in Woodburn, Oregon, United States, and also covering the cities of Hubbard, Aurora, Donald, Gervais, St. Paul and Mt. Angel, and the surrounding area of Marion County. The ''Independent'' was founded in 1888. It is published on Wednesdays by Pamplin Media Group. History The paper was established by Leonard H. McMahan on December 1, 1888. According to the newspaper's staff , the paper preceded the incorporation of Woodburn by about 9 months, and initially read more like a gossip sheet than a news source. McMahan went on to become a member of the Oregon House of Representatives during the 1923 Legislature, and a Marion County Circuit Judge from 1924 to 1943. Eagle Newspapers is an American newspaper publisher serving the states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho. History The origins of the company date back to 1933 when Elmo Smith and his wife, Dorothy, borrowed $25 to establish a mimeographed weekly newspaper in Ontario, Oregon. In 1948, Smith sold the paper and used the proceeds to purchase the Blue Mountain Eagle in John Day, Oregon. That same year Smith and his friend, Bill Robinson, purchased The Madras Pioneer and the family business was incorporated. In 1961, the company purchased the Hood River News. The company changed its name to Eagle Newspapers, Inc. in 1979. In 2013, Eagle Newspapers sold six Oregon newspapers in Central Oregon and the Willamette Valley to the Pamplin Media Group.
