The Calling (Hilltop Hoods Album)
''The Calling'' is the third studio album by Australian hip hop group Hilltop Hoods and was released on 22 September 2003 through Obese Records. The success of the album was significant in the Australian hip hop scene because it demonstrated popular recognition for a genre previously supported by a comparatively small, "underground" fan base. Three singles were released as single and two placed in the 2003 Triple J Hottest 100 chart: "The Nosebleed Section" was voted into ninth place, while " Dumb Enough" was voted into position 44. Reception In an interview after the release of their fourth album, Suffa revealed that ''The Calling'' was recorded on his mother's computer and the simplicity of their 'studio' is the reason why some of the music on the album is in monaural ('mono') sound. Music recording certification is a system of certifying that a music recording has shipped, sold, or streamed a certain number of units. MC Layla
Layla Rose Hanbury (born 5 October 1982), known mononymously as Layla, is an Australian hip hop singer-songwriter and MC from Perth. In January 2005 she released her debut solo album, ''Heretik'', on Obese Records. She is a member of Syllabolix (SBX) Crew, with other MCs including her husband, Dazastah (aka Darren Reutens). The couple also perform as Layla and Dazastah. During September and October 2011 the duo were a support act for another SBX artist, Drapht, on his Australia-wide Party Party Party Tour. Tirren Staaf, otherwise known as Pegz (or MC Pegasus), is an Australian hip hop artist and producer hailing from Melbourne, Victoria. He was the CEO of Obese Records—the record label responsible for artists such as Hilltop Hoods, Downsyde, and Bias B. Biography Tirren Staaf has said that he was named after Tiran Porter, former member of the Doobie Brothers. Pegz has been a part of the Australian hip hop scene since 1992, and has released four full-length studio albums. As a teenager he was first a graffiti artist before becoming a rapper. In 2000, he got a job at Obese Records, a specialist hip-hop music store in Prahran. Dazastah
Dazastah is one of the MCs of the Perth, Western Australia-based hip-hop group Downsyde. History Dazastah (Darren Reutens) joined Downsyde when he met MCs Optamus (Scott Griffiths) and Dyna-mikes (Shahbaz Rind) at Leederville TAFE in the late 1990s. Dazastah is also a producer and as well as working on beats for Downsyde he has produced for interstate performers and is a prominent local producer, working on albums with Hunter and Clandestien. He is also a member of Western Australia hip hop crew, Syllabolix. As well as the four studio albums he has been a part of with Downsyde, Dazastah produced his first album in 2002, ''Done DL'' with Hunter which featured many guest appearances from other Syllabolix Crew members. Hilltop Hoods is an Australian hip hop group that formed in 1996 in Blackwood, Adelaide, South Australia. They are regarded as pioneers of the "larrikin-like" style of Australian hip hop. The group was founded by Suffa (Matthew David Lambert) and Pressure (Daniel Howe Smith), who were joined by DJ Debris (Barry John M. George Kordas, better known by the stage name DJ Bonez, is a hip hop DJ and producer, originally from Sydney and currently based in Melbourne, Australia. DJ Bonez has been described as being at "the forefront of Australian DJing culture as a performer and also catering to DJs worldwide with break beats and scratch records". Career Bonez began creating four-track mix tapes and CDs for the underground hip-hop scene in the late 1980s, while studying at high school. Hyjak N Torcha is an Australian hip hop group from Sydney, New South Wales. Biography The group formed in 2000, consisting of Hyjak (Jack McCarthy), Torcha (John Chmielewski), and DJ Bonez (George Kordas). Hyjak first appeared on the scene in 1998, at the age of fifteen he snuck into a pub in the Sydney suburb of Kings Cross to compete in a rap battle, which he won. Torcha, hailing from Sydney's west, was an active volunteer youth worker, doing programs in youth prisons and performing at anti-war rallies. Formally part of Sydney's Eth-nik Tribe, another Australian hip hop group. Hyjak N Torcha signed to Obese Records and their first album ''Drastik Measures'' was released in 2004. Matthew David Lambert (born 6 May 1977), better known by his stage name Suffa, is an Australian rapper and producer best known as one of the members of the hip hop group Hilltop Hoods. He has produced tracks for other artists, such as Funkoars and Kate Miller-Heidke, in addition to his work with the Hilltop Hoods. Lambert has been a recording artist since the 1999 release of the debut Hilltop Hoods album, '' A Matter of Time.'' Early life Lambert was born on 6 May 1977 in Adelaide, South Australia. He grew up there and states in the lyrics of the Hilltop Hoods song "The Hard Road" that he left high school without graduating and was subsequently employed as a "factory labourer". The album's first single, " I Love It", was released on 25 November 2011, and features vocals from fellow South Australian and Adelaide-born singer-songwriter Sia.
