The British Art Journal
''The British Art Journal'' is a triannual journal/magazine that publishes research on British art from all historical periods. History The publication was launched on 1 July 1999 at a reception held at the Thomas Coram Foundation (which became the Foundling Museum) in London. Two issues were published in the initial year. Since then, three issues have been published each year. The editor is the British art historian and critic, Robin Simon. The journal is accessible online through JSTOR. Robin Simon (critic)
Robin Simon (born 23 July 1947) is a British art historian and critic, editor of the '' British Art Journal''. Simon was a tenured academic at the University of Nottingham, teaching both English Literature and Art History, and was then Director of the Institute of European Studies in London before becoming editor of ''Apollo'' magazine in 1990. He has written and lectured extensively on Italian art of the fourteenth century and on British art, especially of the eighteenth century, on theatre and music, and on the history of cricket. He has been art critic of the '' Daily Mail'' since 1987. From 2007 until 2023 he was Visiting Professor in the Department of English at University College London and, as of March 2023, has been Honorary Professor of Practice in the same department. Since 2018 he has been Professorial Research Fellow in Art History at Buckingham University. JSTOR
JSTOR (; short for ''Journal Storage'') is a digital library founded in 1995 in New York City. Originally containing digitized back issues of academic journals, it now encompasses books and other primary sources as well as current issues of journals in the humanities and social sciences. It provides full-text searches of almost 2,000 journals. , more than 8,000 institutions in more than 160 countries had access to JSTOR. Most access is by subscription but some of the site is public domain, and open access content is available free of charge. JSTOR's revenue was $86 million in 2015. History William G. Art History Journals
Art is a diverse range of human activity, and resulting product, that involves creative or imaginative talent expressive of technical proficiency, beauty, emotional power, or conceptual ideas. There is no generally agreed definition of what constitutes art, and its interpretation has varied greatly throughout history and across cultures. In the Western tradition, the three classical branches of visual art are painting, sculpture, and architecture. Theatre, dance, and other performing arts, as well as literature, music, film and other media such as interactive media, are included in a broader definition of the arts. Until the 17th century, ''art'' referred to any skill or mastery and was not differentiated from crafts or sciences. The Art Journal
''The Art Journal'' was the most important British 19th-century magazine on art. It was founded in 1839 by Hodgson & Graves, print publishers, 6 Pall Mall, with the title ''Art Union Monthly Journal'' (or ''The Art Union''), the first issue of 750 copies appearing 15 February 1839. It was published in London but its readership was global in reach. History Hodgson & Graves hired Samuel Carter Hall as editor of ''Art Union Monthly Journal'', assisted by James Dafforne. Hall soon became the principal proprietor, but he was unable to turn a profit on his own. The London publisher George Virtue bought a share of the business in 1848, with Hall remaining as editor, and they renamed the periodical ''The Art Journal'' in 1849. In 1851, as part of the "Great Exhibition" of that year, ''The Art Journal'' featured Hall's engravings of 150 pictures from the private collections of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Art Critic
An art critic is a person who is specialized in analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating art. Their written critiques or reviews contribute to art criticism and they are published in newspapers, magazines, books, exhibition brochures, and catalogues and on websites. Some of today's art critics use art blogs and other online platforms in order to connect with a wider audience and expand debate about art. Differently from art history, there is not an institutionalized training for art critics (with only few exceptions); art critics come from different backgrounds and they may or may not be university trained. Professional art critics are expected to have a keen eye for art and a thorough knowledge of art history.
