''The Bridge at Villeneuve-la-Garenne'' is an oil on canvas painting by Alfred Sisley created in 1872. It depicts a suspension bridge across the Seine looking toward the village of Villeneuve-la-Garenne. Holidaymakers can be seen on the river and along the riverbank. The work is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Provenance It was bought from the artist on 24 August 1872 by Durand-Ruel, who sold it to Jean-Baptiste Faure on 15 April 1873. It was passed on to his son Louis Maurice's wife, who sold it to Georges Petit and Durand-Ruel in 1919. It was passed through various art dealers before being acquired by Fernand Bouisson sometime before 1930. It was then sold in New York and had been acquired by 1957 by Henry Ittleson Junior and his wife, who donated it to its present owner in 1964. Alfred Sisley
Alfred Sisley (; ; 30 October 1839 – 29 January 1899) was an Impressionist landscape painter who was born and spent most of his life in France, but retained British citizenship. He was the most consistent of the Impressionists in his dedication to painting landscape ''en plein air'' (i.e., outdoors). He deviated into figure painting only rarely and, unlike Renoir and Pissarro, he found that Impressionism fulfilled his artistic needs. Among his important works are a series of paintings of the River Thames, mostly around Hampton Court, executed in 1874, and landscapes depicting places in or near Moret-sur-Loing. The notable paintings of the Seine and its bridges in the former suburbs of Paris are like many of his landscapes, characterised by tranquillity, in pale shades of green, pink, purple, dusty blue and cream. Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. It has been the most common technique for artistic painting on wood panel or canvas for several centuries, spreading from Europe to the rest of the world. Jean-Baptiste Faure () (15 January 1830 – 9 November 1914) was a French operatic baritone and art collector who also composed several classical songs. Singing career Faure was born in Moulins. A choirboy in his youth, he entered the Paris Conservatory in 1851 and made his operatic debut the following year at the Opéra-Comique, as Pygmalion in Victor Massé's ''Galathée''. Georges Petit (11 March 1856 – 12 May 1920) was a French art dealer, a key figure in the Paris art world and an important promoter and cultivator of Impressionist artists. Early career Petit was the son of François Petit, who founded the firm of art dealers at 7, rue Saint-Georges (Paris) in 1846. Within just a few years, the ''Galerie François Petit'' was among the most powerful firms in the French art market. According to Robert Jensen in his book ''Marketing Modernism in Fin-de-Siecle Europe'', the auction house assumed, "multiple roles that ran the gamut from certifying the authenticity of the object, to guiding it through the hazards of the marketplace, to establishing its provenance and enlisting critics and historians to situate the artist's importance."
