Independent music (also commonly known as indie music or simply indie) is music that is produced independently from commercial record labels or their subsidiaries, a process that may include an autonomous, DIY ethic, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing. V2 Records
V2 Records (or V2 Music; V2 being an abbreviation for Virgin 2) is a record label that was purchased by Universal Music Group in 2007 and sold to IASin 2013. In the Benelux, V2 operates separately from PIAS, as the label bought itself out from Universal in 2007. History The label was founded in 1996 by Richard Branson, five years after he sold Virgin Records to EMI. V2 management was led by the same individuals that built Branson's renowned balloon and the control position was held by a Canadian public corporation. The company was restructured after running into financial difficulties with Branson taking control and reinventing the brand. The label was owned 95% by Morgan Stanley, the chief financier of the company, and 5% by Branson. The Hylozoists
The Hylozoists are a Canadian instrumental rock supergroup formed in 2001 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The band's name is derived from hylozoism and was started as a side project of record producer and multi-instrumentalist Paul Aucoin. History The Hylozoists is an instrumental band conceived by producer Paul Aucoin in 2001. Aucoin wrote and recorded their first album La Nouvelle Gauche (using a line-up of musicians mainly from Halifax) in his studio in Nova Scotia. The Hylozoists were moved to the back burner as Aucoin had to return to his responsibilities for the band The Sadies. In 2004 Aucoin moved to Toronto where he revived The Hylozoists. This conception of The Hylozoists would consist of musicians from other bands such as The Weakerthans, FemBots, and Cuff the Duke. Sunparlour Players
Sunparlour Players are a Canadian alternative country band. Based in Toronto, Ontario, the band consists of songwriter Andrew Penner on lead vocals, guitar, bass, banjo, bass organ pedals, percussion, and kick drum and Michael "Rosie" Rosenthal on drums, glockenspiel, banjo, backing vocals, keyboards and bass. They come from Ontario. Andrew Penner grew up on a farm near Leamington, in the region nicknamed Canada's "Sun Parlour". The band independently released its debut album ''Hymns for the Happy'' in 2006, and rereleased it in 2007 after signing to The Baudelaire Label. Their second album, ''Wave North'', followed in 2009 on Outside Music.
