The Basketball Tournament
The Basketball Tournament (TBT) is an open-invitation, single-elimination tournament, single-elimination tournament played each summer in the United States, with the stakes being a cash prize (the most recent tournament in The Basketball Tournament 2024, 2024 had a $1 million purse going to the winners). The number of teams playing in the tournament has varied since its establishment, but in recent years has settled into a 64-team field. The event was founded in 2014 by real estate developer and TV producer Jonathan Mugar, and as of 2024, the tournament airs in the U.S. on Fox (TV network), Fox and its sister network Fox Sports 1 (FS1). Format Teams in TBT are arranged by the general manager (sports), general manager, sometimes based on which college basketball program the players competed for. The tournament, involving 64 teams, began on July 16 and ended on August 2 with the championship game in Dayton, Ohio. The tournament format was similar to that of the last pre-COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, COVID-19 edition in The Basketball Tournament 2019, 2019—64 teams, each playing in one of eight regionals. For the first time, the event had a "championship week", starting with the regional winners advancing to quarterfinals at one of two sites, Dayton and Wichita, Kansas. Single-elimination Tournament
A single-elimination knockout, or sudden-death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of a match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the tournament champion(s). The Basketball Tournament 2015 was the second edition of The Basketball Tournament, a 5-on-5, single elimination basketball tournament. The tournament involved 97 teams; it started on July 10 and continued through August 2, 2015. The winner of the final, Overseas Elite, received a one million dollar prize. The semifinals and championship game, played at Rose Hill Gymnasium at Fordham University in The Bronx, were broadcast on ESPN. The tournament was branded as "The Basketball Tournament Presented by Jack Link's Jerky". Format The main tournament field started with 96 teams, organized into four regions of 24 teams each.
