Basement
A basement or cellar is one or more floors of a building that are completely or partly below the ground floor. It generally is used as a utility space for a building, where such items as the furnace, water heater, breaker panel or fuse box, car park, and air-conditioning system are located; so also are amenities such as the electrical system and cable television distribution point. In cities with high property prices, such as London, basements are often fitted out to a high standard and used as living space. In British English, the word ''basement'' is usually used for underground floors of, for example, department stores. The word is usually used with houses when the space below the ground floor is habitable, with windows and (usually) its own access. The word ''cellar'' applies to the whole underground level or to any large underground room. A ''subcellar'' is a cellar that lies further underneath. Purpose, geography, and history A basement can be used in almost exactly th ...

Basement (geology)
In geology, basement and crystalline basement are crystalline rocks lying above the mantle and beneath all other rocks and sediments. They are sometimes exposed at the surface, but often they are buried under miles of rock and sediment. The basement rocks lie below a sedimentation, sedimentary platform (geology), platform or cover, or more generally any rock below sedimentary rocks or sedimentary basins that are metamorphic rock, metamorphic or Igneous rock, igneous in origin. In the same way, the sediments or sedimentary rocks on top of the basement can be called a "cover" or "sedimentary cover". Crustal rocks are modified several times before they become basement, and these transitions alter their composition. Continental crust Basement rock is the thick foundation of ancient, and oldest, metamorphic and igneous rock that forms the Crust (geology), crust of continents, often in the form of granite. Basement rock is contrasted to overlying sedimentary rocks which are laid down ...

The Basement (play)
''The Basement'' is a television play (later a stage play) by Harold Pinter. It was written first as a screenplay for a film, then revised for television and broadcast on 20 February 1967. Origin: "The Compartment" ''The Basement'' is based on "The Compartment" (1965), an unpublished 27-page screenplay (circulated only in typescript) that Pinter wrote in 1963–65 "for a film never made, planned as part of a triple-bill, ''Project I'' promoted by Grove Press, New York, with Samuel Beckett's '' Film'' 965and Eugène Ionesco's '' The Hard-Boiled Egg''" (Baker and Ross 112). Of the three works planned for this trilogy of films, "only ''Film'' would be produced, being released in 1965" (112). According to Pinter's official authorised biographer Michael Billington, also cited by Baker and Ross (112), "Pinter's contribution ''The Compartment'' lay dormant until he rewrote it for television as ''The Basement''" (Billington 191). Setting The "''exterior''" and ''"interior''" ...

She attended Oxford University and was the first American woman to be awarded a degree with first-class honors after studying at St Hilda's College, Oxford. She has been described as "a seminal influence on second-wave feminism", and is best known for her book ''Sexual Politics'' (1970), which was based on her doctoral dissertation at Columbia University. Journalist Liza Featherstone attributes the attainment of previously unimaginable "legal abortion, greater professional equality between the sexes, and a sexual freedom" in part to Millett's efforts. The feminist, human rights, peace, civil rights, and anti-psychiatry movements were some of Millett's principal causes. Her books were motivated by her activism, such as woman's rights and mental health reform, and several were autobiographical memoirs that explored her sexuality, mental health, a ...
