The Bache Madonna
The ''Bache Madonna'' or ''Madonna and Child'' is an oil painting on wood by Titian, dating to and belonging to his juvenile period, when he was still strongly influenced by Giorgione. Investigation has suggested that the artist first posed the figures sitting erect in the center of the composition, in the manner of Giovanni Bellini. However, the final pose is more informal, emphasising the tender bond between the mother and her child. Past cleaning has caused the picture to lose some definition. Provenance Its first recorded owner was Jean de Jullienne in Paris around 1756. It was later acquired by Brownlow Cecil, 9th Earl of Exeter, in whose family collection it remained until 1888. It then passed through several private collections before being acquired in 1928 by Jules Bache, after whom it is named. Giorgione
Giorgione (, , ; born Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco; 1477–78 or 1473–74 – 17 September 1510) was an Italian painter of the Venetian school during the High Renaissance, who died in his thirties. He is known for the elusive poetic quality of his work, though only about six surviving paintings are firmly attributed to him. The uncertainty surrounding the identity and meaning of his work has made Giorgione one of the most mysterious figures in European art. Together with his younger contemporary Titian, he founded the Venetian school of Italian Renaissance painting, characterised by its use of colour and mood. The school is traditionally contrasted with Florentine painting, which relied on a more linear disegno-led style. Giovanni Bellini
Giovanni Bellini (; c. 1430 – 26 November 1516) was an Italian Renaissance painter, probably the best known of the Bellini family of Venetian painters. He was raised in the household of Jacopo Bellini, formerly thought to have been his father, but now that familial generational relationship is questioned.; “Giovanni Bellini: Birth, Parentage, and Independence" in ''Renaissance Quarterly'' An older brother, Gentile Bellini was more highly regarded than Giovanni during his lifetime, but the reverse is true today. Brownlow Cecil, 9th Earl Of Exeter
Brownlow Cecil, 9th Earl of Exeter (21 September 1725 – 26 December 1793), known as Lord Burghley from 1725 to 1754, was a British peer and Member of Parliament. Life Exeter was the eldest son of Brownlow Cecil, 8th Earl of Exeter, and Hannah Sophia Chambers. He was educated at Winchester and St John's College, Cambridge. He was elected to the House of Commons for Rutland in 1747, a seat he held until 1754, when he succeeded his father in the earldom and entered the House of Lords. He also served as Lord Lieutenant of Rutland. Between 1755 and 1779, the 9th Earl employed Lancelot 'Capability' Brown to landscape the Burghley House Deer Park. Lord Exeter died in December 1793, aged 68. He was childless and was succeeded in his titles by his nephew Henry, who was created Marquess of Exeter in 1801. Jules Semon Bache (November 9, 1861 – March 24, 1944) was an American banker, art collector and philanthropist. Early life Julius Bache was born to a Jewish family in New York City. His father, Semon Bache [né Bach] (1826–1891), emigrated to the United States from his native Nuremberg, Kingdom of Bavaria, Bavaria, settling in New York City where he started the glassmaking firm Semon Bache & Company. Career In 1881, he started work as a cashier at Leopold Cahn & Co., a stockbrokerage firm founded by his uncle. In 1886, he was made a minority partner and in 1892 took full control of the business, renaming it Bache & Co., J. S. Bache & Co.
