Thaxton, Virginia
Thaxton is an unincorporated community in western Bedford County, Virginia, United States. The community is located along US Route 460 between Bedford and Montvale. It is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Thomas Methodist Episcopal Chapel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Thaxton was the site of a deadly train accident on July 2, 1889 that killed at least 18 and injured 21. The accident, caused when a passenger train derailed over a section of track that had been washed away by unusually heavy rains, was one of the deadliest railroad accidents in Virginia's history. A memorial was erected later that year in Cleveland, Tennessee in memory of three of the victims, all from prominent families in that city, who were on their way to attend the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. Lynchburg Regional Airport , also known as Preston Glenn Field, is a public use airport in Campbell County, Virginia, United States. It is located at the intersection of Route 29 South and Route 460, five nautical miles (6 mi, 9 km) southwest of the central business district of the City of Lynchburg, which owns the airport. Opened in 1931, it was originally named Preston Glenn Airport in honor of Lt. Preston Glenn, a Lynchburg native who died while serving in World War I as an Army Air Corps pilot. WSET-TV (channel 13) is a television station licensed to Lynchburg, Virginia, United States, serving as the ABC affiliate for the Roanoke–Lynchburg market. The station is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, and has studios on Langhorne Road in Lynchburg; its transmitter is located atop Thaxton Mountain, near Thaxton, Virginia. History Channel 13 began operations on February 8, 1953, as WLVA-TV from a transmitter on Tobacco Row Mountain west of Sweet Briar. The station was owned by Lynchburg Broadcasting Corporation, which also owned WLVA radio (580 AM). The ''Cleveland Daily Banner'' is a three day weekly newspaper published in Cleveland, Tennessee. Founded in 1854, it is the longest-running newspaper in Bradley County, and one of the oldest newspapers in the state. The newspaper was founded as the ''Cleveland Banner'', a Democratic newspaper by editor Robert McNelley (pronounced "McAnnelley"), and published its first edition on May 1, 1854. McNelley, who was a supporter of the Confederacy during the Civil War, was arrested by Federal troops in the fall of 1863, and the newspaper ceased publication.
