Roland Gutierrez (politician)
Roland Gutierrez (born September 1, 1970) is an American attorney and a Democratic member of the Texas Senate who represents District 19. Gutierrez is a graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio and St. Mary's University School of Law, also in San Antonio. While serving in the Texas House, Gutierrez chaired the House Committee on Defense and Veterans' Affairs on appointment from Republican House Speaker Joe Straus, also of San Antonio. In 2020, Gutierrez, ran for Texas Senate, District 19 against incumbent Republican Pete Flores. On November 3, 2020, Gutierrez defeated Flores, winning District 19 with 50% of the vote to 47% for Flores. Bexar County ( or ; es, Béxar ) is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. It is in South Texas and its county seat is San Antonio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,009,324. Bexar County is included in the San Antonio–New Braunfels, TX metropolitan statistical area. It is the 16th-most populous county in the nation and the fourth-most populated in Texas. With a population that is 59.3% Hispanic as of 2020, it is Texas' most populous majority-Hispanic county and the third-largest such nationwide. Pete Flores
Peter P. Flores (born January 30, 1960) is an American politician. He represented District 19 in the Texas Senate from 2018 to 2021. A member of the Republican Party, he was the first Hispanic Republican Texas State Senator in Texas history, and he was the first Republican to be elected in District 19 since 1879 during the Reconstruction Era. In the 2020 election, Flores was defeated by his Democratic challenger. Flores won the Republican nomination for Texas State Senate District 24 on May 24, 2022, defeating Raul Reyes by 60% to 40%. Early life Flores's parents, Margarito and Lilia Flores, retired in Laredo, Texas. Flores grew up in South Texas. He graduated from Laredo Martin High and attended Laredo Junior College before graduating from Texas A&M University. 2020 Texas State Senate Election
The 2020 Texas Senate elections took place as part of the biennial United States elections. Texas voters elected state senators in 16 of the 31 state senate districts. State senators serve four-year terms in the Texas State Senate. Those elected in 2020 will only be elected for two years, however, as part of the 2-4-4 term system. A statewide map of Texas's state Senate districts can be obtained from the Texas Legislative Council. and individual district maps can be obtained from the U.S. Census. Following the 2016 state senate elections, Republicans maintained effective control of the Senate with 19 members.
