Terry Kirkman
Terry Robert Kirkman (born December 12, 1939) is an American musician, who was the lead vocalist for the folk rock group the Association and writer of their hit songs " Cherish", " Everything That Touches You", and "Six Man Band" among many others. He was inducted as a member of the Association into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003. Biography Kirkman was born in Salina, Kansas, and grew up in Chino, California, and attended Chaffey College as a music major. He was a salesman visiting Hawaii in 1962 when he met Jules Alexander, who was in the Navy at the time. The two promised to meet up when Alexander was discharged. Kirkman moved to Los Angeles with Alexander the following year and played with Frank Zappa before Zappa formed The Mothers of Invention. Kirkman and Alexander were members of a thirteen-piece band, The Men. The group disbanded in February 1965 and Kirkman and five other members formed their own band. Salina, Kansas
Salina is a city in, and the county seat of, Saline County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 46,889. In the early 1800s, the Kanza tribal land reached eastward from the middle of the Kansas Territory. In 1858, settlers from Lawrence founded the Salina Town Company with a wagon circle, under constant threat of High Plains tribal attacks from the west. It was named for the salty Saline River. Saline County was soon organized around this township, and in 1870, Salina incorporated as a city. As the westernmost town on the Smoky Hill Trail, Salina boomed until the Civil War by establishing itself as a trading post for westbound immigrants, gold prospectors bound for Pikes Peak, and area American Indian tribes. We Five
We Five was a 1960s folk rock musical group based in San Francisco, California. Their best-known hit was their 1965 remake of Ian & Sylvia's " You Were on My Mind", which reached No. 1 on the Cashbox chart, #3 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The original group split after recording their second album in 1967, but a re-formed band produced three more albums between 1968 and 1977. Biography Formation and organization Michael Stewart formed We Five after graduating from Pomona Catholic High School and attending Mt. San Antonio College. He was the brother of John Stewart of the Kingston Trio and came from Claremont, California. Beverly Bivens
Beverly (Bev) Ann Bivens is the former the lead singer of the American West Coast folk rock group We Five from 1965 to 1967. Since 2021 she has been the original band’s last surviving member. After her marriage to jazz musician Fred Marshall and the break-up of We Five, she sang for a while with the experimental Light Sound Dimension, but by the late 1960s Bivens had largely left the music scene. After many years of relative seclusion, she sang at the opening of an exhibition in San Francisco in 2009. Her son is the saxophonist Joshi Marshall. Montclair is a city in the Pomona Valley, in southwestern San Bernardino County, California, San Bernardino County, California. The population was 36,664 in the 2010 United States Census. History The earliest known inhabitants of the area were from the Serrano people, Serrano tribe of Native Americans. Cherish (The Association Song)
"Cherish" is a pop song written by Terry Kirkman and recorded by the Association. Released in 1966, the song reached number one on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot 100 in September of that year and remained in the top position for three weeks. ''Billboard'' ranked the record as the No. 7 song of 1966, and later as No. 2, after a revision of the year-end charts. It was certified Gold by the RIAA in the US in 1966. In Canada, the song also reached number one. Original version Songwriting Terry Kirkman wrote it in half an hour and put it into the live act of his group, the Association. He was looking for an emotional, slow tempo song in the same vein as the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'".
