Tephromela Lignicola
''Tephromela lignicola'' is a species of lignicolous (wood-dwelling), crustose lichen in the family Tephromelataceae. It is found in the Falkland Islands, where it grows on fenceposts and similar timber. Taxonomy The lichen was formally described as a new species in 2019 by lichenologists Alan Orange and Alan Fryday. The type specimen was collected by the second author from Weddell Island, where it was found growing on a fencepost. The species epithet refers to its preferred substrate. Other lichens associated with ''Tephromela lignicola'' include '' Blastenia circumpolaris'', '' Buellia punctata'', '' Cliostomum griffithii'', '' Lecanora expallens'', and '' Xylographa vitiligo''. Alan Orange (19 June 1955 – 5 February 2023) was a British lichenologist. His research interests included lichen taxonomy and phylogenetics, aquatic lichens, and the family Verrucariaceae. Early life and education Alan Orange was born in Leeds on 19 June 1955, and shortly after, his family relocated to Longhope in the Forest of Dean. Soredia are common reproductive structures of lichens. Lichens reproduce asexually by employing simple fragmentation and production of soredia and isidia. Soredia are powdery propagules composed of fungal hyphae wrapped around cyanobacteria or green algae. A lichenicolous fungus is a parasitic fungus that only lives on lichen as the host. A lichenicolous fungus is not the same as the fungus that is the component of the lichen, which is known as a lichenized fungus. They are most commonly specific to a given fungus as the host, but they also include a wide range of pathogens, saprotrophs, and commensals. ''Skyttea'' is a genus of lichenicolous (lichen-dwelling) fungi in the family Cordieritidaceae. The genus was circumscribed in 1981 by lichenologists Martha Allen Sherwood, David L. West Falkland
West Falkland ( es, Isla Gran Malvina) is the second largest of the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. It is a hilly island, separated from East Falkland by the Falkland Sound.
