Alan Orange
Alan Orange (19 June 1955 – 5 February 2023) was a British lichenologist. His research interests included lichen taxonomy and phylogenetics, aquatic lichens, and the family Verrucariaceae. Early life and education Alan Orange was born in Leeds on 19 June 1955, and shortly after, his family relocated to Longhope in the Forest of Dean. This environment fostered his passion for botanical exploration, often accompanied by cousins and the family dogs. His penchant for collecting and classifying challenging organisms began in childhood, evident from his extensive bramble collection. Additionally, he showcased a natural talent for art, crafting intricate botanical illustrations throughout his life. Lichenology is the branch of mycology that studies the lichens, symbiotic organisms made up of an intimate symbiotic association of a microscopic alga (or a cyanobacterium) with a filamentous fungus. British Lichen Society
The British Lichen Society (BLS) was founded in 1958 with the objective of promoting the study and conservation of lichen. Although the society was founded in London, UK, it is also of relevance to lichens worldwide. It has been a registered charity (number 228850) since 1964. History At the instigation of Dougal Swinscow, the first meeting of the society was held at the British Museum on 1 February 1958; there were 24 attendees. Several positions were decided: Arthur Edward Wade was elected as the secretary, Peter Wilfred James as the editor and recorder, Joseph Peterken as the treasurer, David Smith the librarian, and Swinscow as curator and assistant editor. Trapeliaceae
Trapeliaceae is a family of lichens in the order Baeomycetales. The family contains 12 genera and about 125 species. Taxonomy Trapeliaceae was originally circumscribed by French lichenologist Maurice Choisy in 1929. Hannes Hertel emended the family in 1970. Because of similarities in ascus structure, the family was originally classified in the Agyriineae, a suborder of the Lecanorales. Preliminary molecular phylogenetic studies showed that Agyriineae was not related to the Lecanorales, and the order Agyriales was resurrected to contain the family. Some authorities considered Trapeliaceae to be synonymous with Agyriaceae. In 2007, Thorsten Lumbsch and colleagues transferred Trapeliaceae to the order Baeomycetales based on a sister relationship between Trapeliaceae and a clade in the Baeomycetales. Porinaceae
Trichotheliaceae is a family of lichen-forming fungi in the order Gyalectales. The family was circumscribed by Friedrich von Schilling and Friedrich August Georg Bitter in 1927. In a recent (2018) molecular phylogenetic analysis, Trichotheliaceae was shown to be part of a monophyletic clade containing the families Coenogoniaceae, Gyalectaceae, Phlyctidaceae, and Sagiolechiaceae. Crustose Lichen
Crustose lichens are lichens that form a crust which strongly adheres to the Substrate (biology), substrate (soil, rock, tree bark, etc.), making separation from the substrate impossible without destruction. The basic structure of crustose lichens consists of a cortex (botany), cortex layer, an algal layer, and a medulla. The upper cortex layer is differentiated and is usually pigmented. The algal layer lies beneath the cortex. The medulla fastens the lichen to the substrate and is made up of Fungus, fungal hyphae. Lady Park Wood National Nature Reserve () is a nature reserve straddling the borders of Gloucestershire in England and Monmouthshire in Wales. Most of the wood is in Wales – where it forms Wales' easternmost point – but it is managed under agreement with Natural England. The wood is in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
