Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including wheelchair users. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as lawn tennis. Tiiu Parmas
Tiiu Parmas (18 December 1943 – 23 August 2011) was an Estonian tennis player. She competed under her maiden name Tiiu Kivi, until her marriage to coach Jaak Parmas in 1969. Born in Tallinn, Parmas was the Soviet national champion in 1968 and made the singles third round of the 1969 French Open. Tennis At The Summer Universiade
Tennis has been a part of the Summer Universiade program since the games' first edition in 1959, with the exception of the 1975 Summer Universiade and again in 1989. The first change at the program was at the 1987 edition, when FISU decided awards two bronze medals for the losers of the semifinals, extinguishing the fourth place. The second change was in 2009, when the team competitions were included. Currently, seven events are played at Universiade. Individual, double and team contests for men and women, as well as mixed doubles. Geoff Pollard
Geoffrey Neil Pollard, AM (born 18 January 1944) is an Australian sports administrator and former professional tennis player. He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in the 1989 Australia Day Honours list. A left-handed player from Sydney, Pollard was active as a player in the 1960s and 1970s. He lost to John Newcombe in the junior singles final of the 1961 Australian Championships and earned selection on Australia's Junior Davis Cup team. In 1962 he was runner-up to Tony Roche in the 18s and under Orange Bowl tournament. Pollard, a University of Sydney science graduate, partnered with Kaye Dening to win a mixed doubles gold medal at the 1967 Summer Universiade in Tokyo. Janet Young (tennis)
Janet Anne Young (born 22 October 1951) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. Biography Professional tennis Young competed on the WTA Tour in the 1970s and won a total of three doubles titles, all of which came partnering Evonne Goolagong. The pair were finalists in eight tournaments across the 1973 season and semi-finalists at the Australian Open, Wimbledon Championships and US Open. As a singles player, Young won the Queensland Open and South Australian Championships in 1973, both non-tour events. At the 1973 Wimbledon Championships, she won through to the fourth round, where she faced Chris Evert. She took Evert to a third set, which she lost 6–8, having led 4–0. Kazuko Sawamatsu
Kazuko Sawamatsu ( ja, 沢松和子, born 5 January 1951) is a retired tennis player from Japan. She competed in a number of major LTA tournaments in the 1970s on the world circuit. At the 1975 Australian Open, she reached the quarterfinals as well as reached the quarterfinals of the French Open and U.S. Open the same year. She also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open in 1973, and won the 1975 Wimbledon ladies doubles title with partner Ann Kiyomura. Tine Zwaan (born 17 June 1947) is a Dutch former professional tennis player. Odile de Roubin (born 28 September 1948) is a former professional tennis player from France. Biography As a junior, de Roubin won the girls' singles title at the 1966 French Championships. Charles "Charlie" Owens (born July 31, 1950) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Career Owens won the Orange Bowl in 1966 for the 16 and under age division.
