State Route 310 (SR 310), also known as Mecca Pike, is a short east–west state highway in McMinn County, Tennessee. It connects Etowah, via SR 39, to Tellico Plains. Route description SR 310 begins in Etowah at an intersection with US 411/ SR 30 (Tennessee Avenue/ SR 33). It goes east to cross a bridge over some railroad tracks before leaving Etowah and going down a narrow valley between mountains. SR 310 passes through the community of Conasauga before passing along the edge of the Cherokee National Forest, to the south, before entering the community of Mecca. It crosses a bridge over a creek before coming to an end at an intersection with SR 39. SR 310 is a two-lane rural highway for its entire length. Etowah, Tennessee
Etowah is a city in McMinn County in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The population was 3,613 at the 2020 census. History Etowah was founded in 1906, primarily as a location for a depot on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) line as part of a more direct route between Atlanta and Cincinnati. The etymology of the town name is unclear, but local folklore states that a train crew brought a sign reading "Etowah" from the Etowah River, and the name stuck. The word Etowah comes from the Muskogee/Creek word ' meaning "town." In 1902, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad announced its plan to build a more direct line from Atlanta to Cincinnati in order to avoid the rugged mountains of North Georgia and East Tennessee bypassing the Great Hiwassee Loop. McMinn County is a county in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is located in East Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 53,794. The county has a total area of . Most of the county is within the Ridge and Valley province of the Appalachian Mountains. Its county seat is Athens. McMinn County comprises the Athens, TN Micropolitan Statistical Area. History McMinn County was created in 1819 from Indian lands and was named in honor of Joseph McMinn (1758–1824). McMinn was a militia commander during the Revolutionary War, a member of the territorial legislature, speaker of the state senate, and eventually governor of the state of Tennessee. McMinn died on October 17, 1824, and is buried at Shiloh Presbyterian Cemetery in Calhoun. State Route 39 (SR 39) is a state highway in McMinn and Monroe counties in the eastern portion of the U.S. state of Tennessee. Route description SR 39 begins as a secondary highway in McMinn County in Riceville at Exit 42 on I-75. It then goes east as a 2-lane country road to the center of town and has a short concurrency with US 11/ SR 2. It then turns northeast, now concurrent with US 11 BUS, to parallel US 11/SR 2 and leave Riceville to go through some countryside before entering Athens. Tellico Plains, Tennessee
Tellico Plains is a town in Monroe County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 859 at the 2000 census and 880 at the 2010 census. History The area along the Tellico River was inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous peoples. The historic Muscogee settled here, before moving further south. In the late 18th century, the Cherokee settled in this area, displaced from the east and north by European colonial encroachment. A United States fur trade factory was situated here between 1795 and 1807. It runs generally west to east, connecting McMinnville in Warren County with Parksville along the Ocoee River in Polk County. State Route 33 (SR 33) is a primary and secondary route in East Tennessee. It runs 176 miles, from the Georgia state line in Polk County, northeast to the Virginia state line north of Kyles Ford in Hancock County. South of Maryville, SR 33 is a "hidden" route which shares a concurrency with US 411. The section of SR 33 between Knoxville and Tazewell, along with US 25E between Tazewell and Middlesboro, Kentucky, was an inspiration for the song The Ballad of Thunder Road.
