Tennessee State Route 212
State Route 212 (SR 212) is a state highway in Lake County in the northwestern portion of the U.S. state of Tennessee. It provides access to the Tennessee Department of Correction's Northwest Correctional Complex. Route description SR 212 begins in Tiptonville city limits, (but north of downtown) at an intersection with SR 22. It travels to the west to an entrance to the Northwest Correctional Complex and then, at a steep curve, it turns south. Then, at another steep curve, it turns back west and travels in front of the Northwest Correctional Complex. At a three-way intersection, SR 212 turns south again and continues southerly until it meets its eastern terminus, an intersection with SR 78 northeast of Tiptonville. Tiptonville, Tennessee
Tiptonville is a town in and the county seat of Lake County, Tennessee, United States. Its population was 2,439 as of the 2000 census and 4,464 in 2010, showing an increase of 2,025. It is also home to the Northwest Correctional Complex, a maximum security prison, known for once housing mass murderer Jessie Dotson. History Tiptonville was established in 1857, but was not incorporated until 1900. It was designated the county seat when Lake County was created in 1870. Tiptonville was the scene of the surrender of Confederate forces at the end of the 1862 Battle of Island Number Ten in the American Civil War. The monument for this battle is located on State Route 22 approximately three miles north of Tiptonville, since the island itself, the focal point of the battle, has been eroded by the flow of the Mississippi River and no longer exists. Lake County is a County (United States), county located in the northwest corner of the U.S. state of Tennessee. State Route 78 (abbreviated SR 78) is a long primary state highway in northwestern Tennessee, USA. This highway carries a dual primary and secondary designation, however, the majority of this highway is signed as a Primary State Highway. The only portion of SR 78 designated as secondary is between its southern terminus at SR 104 to US 51 in Dyersburg. Route description SR 78 begins in Dyersburg as a 5-lane urban highway (with center turn lane) featuring a speed limit. North of US 51/ SR 3 the road expands to a 7-lane urban highway and features the highest traffic counts in the Dyersburg area, frequently rising above 30,000 AADT. This section of SR 78 at one time featured speed limits, however, due to excessive traffic this section has been reduced to a speed limit. Kentucky Bend
The Kentucky Bend, variously called the New Madrid Bend, Madrid Bend, Bessie Bend, or Bubbleland, is an exclave of Fulton County, Kentucky, encircled by the states of Tennessee and Missouri. It is a portion of a peninsula defined by an oxbow loop meander of the Mississippi River, and its inclusion in the state of Kentucky stems from uncertainties of the course of the Mississippi River when the boundary between Tennessee and Kentucky was established. Kentucky Bend is the extreme southwestern corner of Kentucky. The peninsula is traversed by the southern line of latitude of the state of Kentucky, at the banks of the Mississippi River. Hickman is a city in and the county seat of Fulton County, Kentucky, United States. Located on the Mississippi River, the city had a population of 2,365 at the 2020 U.S. census and is classified as a home rule-class city. Hickman is part of the Union City micropolitan area. History This area was long occupied by various cultures of indigenous peoples. European-American settlement of this area did not begin until decades after the American Revolutionary War. List Of State Routes In Tennessee
The Tennessee state routes do not follow a systematic numbering system unlike the U.S. Highway System and some other states' highway systems. The routes are separated into primary and secondary routes though. Many of the routes are hidden in that they are overlaid on U.S. Routes and not signed. The mile markers throughout Tennessee, however, show the state route number for these hidden routes. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) maintains these routes under the "State Highways" title of state law, but designates them as "state routes".
