Tempering (metallurgy)
Tempering is a process of heat treating, which is used to increase the toughness of iron-based alloys. Tempering is usually performed after hardening, to reduce some of the excess hardness, and is done by heating the metal to some temperature below the critical point for a certain period of time, then allowing it to cool in still air. The exact temperature determines the amount of hardness removed, and depends on both the specific composition of the alloy and on the desired properties in the finished product. For instance, very hard tools are often tempered at low temperatures, while springs are tempered at much higher temperatures. Introduction Tempering is a heat treatment technique applied to ferrous alloys, such as steel or cast iron, to achieve greater toughness by decreasing the hardness of the alloy. The reduction in hardness is usually accompanied by an increase in ductility, thereby decreasing the brittleness of the metal. Tempering is usually performed after quench ...

The Tempering
''The Tempering'' is a young adult novel by the American writer Gloria Skurzynski set in 1911 in the fictional mill town of Canaan (a parallel to the author's hometown of Duquesne, Pennsylvania, just south of Pittsburgh on the Monongahela River). It tells the story of Karl Kerner and his friends Jame and Andy as they come of age among the sounds and the smoke of a booming steel town peopled by a wide variety of immigrants. In 1983 the novel won Golden Kite Award of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and was chosen one of the Best Books for Young Adults by the American Library Association The American Library Association (ALA) is a nonprofit organization based in the United States that promotes libraries and library education internationally. Tempel (boat)
Tempel, also known as temper or kurikong, is a type of wooden motorized boat used by the Yakan, Tausug, and Sama-Bajau people of the Philippines. It is commonly used in the Sulu Archipelago and the Zamboanga Peninsula. It is around long, deep, and around at the widest point. It has a V-shaped cross-section at the front, though it is flat-bottomed on the stern for stability. It is commonly made from thick marine lauan plywood attached to ribs and caulked with epoxy. Tempel can also be made from fiberglass, though wood is preferred. Tempel are larger than the junkung but smaller than the kumpit. They are usually used as cargo ships. Tempered Representation
In mathematics, a tempered representation of a linear semisimple Lie group is a representation that has a basis whose matrix coefficients lie in the L''p'' space :''L''2+ε(''G'') for any ε > 0. Formulation This condition, as just given, is slightly weaker than the condition that the matrix coefficients are square-integrable, in other words lie in :''L''2(''G''), which would be the definition of a discrete series representation. If ''G'' is a linear semisimple Lie group with a maximal compact subgroup ''K'', an admissible representation ρ of ''G'' is tempered if the above condition holds for the ''K''-finite matrix coefficients of ρ. The definition above is also used for more general groups, such as ''p''-adic Lie groups and finite central extensions of semisimple real algebraic groups. The definition of "tempered representation" makes sense for arbitrary unimodular locally compact groups, but on groups with infinite centers such as infinite central extensions ...

Tempered Distribution
Distributions, also known as Schwartz distributions or generalized functions, are objects that generalize the classical notion of functions in mathematical analysis. Distributions make it possible to differentiate functions whose derivatives do not exist in the classical sense. In particular, any locally integrable function has a distributional derivative. Distributions are widely used in the theory of partial differential equations, where it may be easier to establish the existence of distributional solutions than classical solutions, or where appropriate classical solutions may not exist. Distributions are also important in physics and engineering where many problems naturally lead to differential equations whose solutions or initial conditions are singular, such as the Dirac delta function. A function f is normally thought of as on the in the function domain by "sending" a point x in its domain to the point f(x). Instead of acting on points, distribution theory reinterp ...

Tempering (music)
In musical tuning, a temperament is a tuning system that slightly compromises the pure intervals of just intonation to meet other requirements. Most modern Western musical instruments are tuned in the equal temperament system. Tempering is the process of altering the size of an interval by making it narrower or wider than pure. "Any plan that describes the adjustments to the sizes of some or all of the twelve fifth intervals in the circle of fifths so that they accommodate pure octaves and produce certain sizes of major thirds is called a ''temperament''." Temperament is especially important for keyboard instruments, which typically allow a player to play only the pitches assigned to the various keys, and lack any way to alter pitch of a note in performance. Historically, the use of just intonation, Pythagorean tuning and meantone temperament meant that such instruments could sound "in tune" in one key, or some keys, but would then have more dissonance in other keys. In t ...

Temper, Or, Domestic Scenes
''Temper, or, Domestic Scenes'' is a three-volume novel by Amelia Opie that was published in 1812 and 1813. It explores issues concerning mother-daughter relationships, female education, and the unfairness of patriarchal marriage customs. Opie set part of the novel in Paris (which she had visited in 1802), where her characters take what is 'tantamount to a tourist trip around places of revolutionary bloodshed'. Synopsis ''Temper'' follows the instruction of its heroine, Emma. She is the daughter of Agatha Torrington, and the granddaughter of Emma Castlemain. Opie criticizes both Agatha and the older Emma for not correctly educating their daughters. Agatha's own lax education is partly responsible for her unwise marriage to George Danvers. He turns out to be a libertine, who deserts her and their daughter Emma. Agatha tries to get proof that her marriage was lawful, but the relevant page has been torn out of the marriage register. As a result, Emma is potentially illegitimate ...
