Telegraph ( kw, Brebellskrif) is a settlement on St Mary's, the largest of the Isles of Scilly, England. Telegraph is located in the north west of the island and is the highest point on St Mary's and in the Isles of Scilly, at above sea level. This elevation made it (and continues to make it) an ideal spot for communications (transmitting within the islands and with the British mainland too). The settlement takes its name from Telegraph Tower, situated at the summit of the hill. History of telegraph communication to Scilly In the late 1860s, Mr. Buxton of Scilly attempted to persuade the Post Office to install a telegraph cable to the Isles of Scilly. The Isles of Scilly (; kw, Syllan, ', or ) is an archipelago off the southwestern tip of Cornwall, England. One of the islands, St Agnes, is the most southerly point in Britain, being over further south than the most southerly point of the British mainland at Lizard Point. Coastguard's Lookout Tower
Coastguard’s Lookout Tower, now known as Telegraph Tower, is a Grade II listed structure built around 1814-16 on St Mary's, Isles of Scilly as a Signal station for the Admiralty. In May 1812 the military governor of the Isles of Scilly, Lieutenant General Vigoureux, requested a new signal tower station on Newford Down, St Mary’s to allow signals to be passed from the mainland in Cornwall to the batteries below Star Castle. The Admiralty agreed and adverts for its construction were placed in October 1813. After a series of delays, the tower was erected by Messrs. Hambledon. The date of construction is quoted as 1814, but it was reported in the ''Hampshire Chronicle'' on 8 January 1816 that had been erected on Newford Down, Scilly, and Lieutenant John Trinder RN was appointed to superintend it. Nanjizal ( kw, Porth Nansusel, meaning "cove of the howling valley"), also known as Mill Bay, is a beach and cove in the civil parish of St Levan, Cornwall, United Kingdom. Situated one mile to the south-east of Land's End, Nanjizal has no direct access via road, and is usually reached via the South West Coast Path from Land's End in the north, or from Porthgwarra to the south. Nanjizal is also a noted bird watching location. Geography Nanjizal is a cove and valley facing west into the Atlantic Ocean.
