The Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (; PUC-Rio) is a Society of Jesus, Jesuit, Roman Catholic, Catholic, pontifical university in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the joint responsibility of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, Catholic Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and the Society of Jesus. History The University was created in 1941 by the Society of Jesus to emphasize humanistic values in the pursuit of knowledge. PUC-Rio has 12,000 undergraduate students, 2,500 postgraduate, graduate students, and 4,000 Continuing education, extension students. In 2009 it ranked first among 2,252 higher education institutions in Brazil on ENADE, a benchmark exercise run by the Brazilian Ministry (government department), Ministry of Education. Times Higher Education World University Rankings
The ''Times Higher Education World University Rankings'', often referred to as the THE Rankings, is the annual publication of university rankings by the ''Times Higher Education'' magazine. The publisher had collaborated with Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) to publish the joint ''Times Higher Education–QS World University Rankings, THE-QS World University Rankings'' from 2004 to 2009 before it turned to Thomson Reuters for a new ranking system from 2010 to 2013.
