Te Hana Hudson
Te Hana Hudson (previously Kahu) is a fictional character on the New Zealand soap opera ''Shortland Street'' who was portrayed by Vanessa Rare for two stints from 2001 to 2005. The matriarch of the Hudson family unit, Te Hana was introduced during an infamous revamp of the show and was a representation of the working class New Zealander. Creation and casting In 2000 an Australian consultant made several large changes to the show that would see a more working class hospital portrayed. Te Hana, her husband Joe and children Mihi and Tama were created because of this. As part of the revamp, producers wished for a more community based cast with established family links, mimicking the past presence of the Warner and McKenna families. The Hudson's arrival was said to be a "shock" for the established character of Te Hana's brother, Victor Kahu (Calvin Tuteao). Vanessa Rare was cast in the role. ''Shortland Street'' is a New Zealand prime-time soap opera centring on the fictitious Shortland Street Hospital, first broadcast on TVNZ 2 on 25 May 1992. It is New Zealand's longest-running drama and soap opera, being broadcast continuously for over 7,500 episodes and 30 years, and is one of the most watched television programmes in New Zealand. The show was originally screened as five half-hour episodes each week and initially receiving mixed reviews on its premiere. Amber Curreen (born ) is an actor and theatre producer based in Auckland, New Zealand. She played character Shannon Te Ngaru on ''Shortland Street''. She is a producer with Auckland theatre companies Te Rēhia Theatre Company and Te Pou Theatre. Life and career Curreen grew up on Waiheke Island. She is of Māori and Pākehā descent. Her father who died in 2017 was Ngāpuhi. From 2001 to 2006, Curreen was an actor in the television soap opera ''Shortland Street'' playing the character Shannon Te Ngaru. Peter David Broughton , generally known as Rawiri Paratene, is a New Zealand stage and screen actor, director and writer. He is known for his acting roles in ''Whale Rider'' (2002) and '' The Insatiable Moon'' (2010). Biography Paratene was born at Motukaraka, near Kohukohu, Hokianga, New Zealand, and is of Ngāpuhi descent. He grew up in the south Auckland suburb of Otara, and attended Hillary College as David Broughton, the English form of his name. Paratene's parents were Boyd Alex Broughton and Patricia Charlotte Hancy. Paratene initially struggled with reading and writing at school, but went on to be the first Māori graduate of the New Zealand Drama School. David Wikaira-Paul (born 30 January 1985) played Tama Hudson on New Zealand television series Shortland Street. Biography David joined the cast of Shortland Street in 2001 to play fresh-faced 14-year-old Tama Hudson, a high school student. David himself had already left school and completed a year of tertiary education at Northland Polytechnic. He graduated from the Polytechnic in 2000 with a Certificate in Applied Arts, Music and Drama, having played the lead role in their production of Te Ngaru Nui. Other theatre credits include Late Nights with Tuakau College, and Buggy Wonderland and The Miraculous Fairy Tale with the Kaleidescope Performing Arts Company. Moving to Auckland, David signed with an acting agency and was soon cast in Shortland Street.
