The Taíno were a historic Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, indigenous people of the Caribbean whose culture has been continued today by Taíno descendant communities and Taíno revivalist communities. At the time of European contact in the late 15th century, they were the principal inhabitants of most of what is now Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and the northern Lesser Antilles. The Lucayan people, Lucayan branch of the Taíno were the first New World peoples encountered by Christopher Columbus, in the Lucayan Archipelago, Bahama Archipelago on October 12, 1492. The Taíno spoke a dialect of the Arawakan languages, Arawakan language group. Taíno Language
Taíno is an extinct Arawakan language that was spoken by the Taíno people of the Caribbean. At the time of Spanish contact, it was the most common language throughout the Caribbean. Classic Taíno (Taíno proper) was the native language of the Taíno tribes living in the northern Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and most of Hispaniola, and expanding into Cuba. The Ciboney dialect is essentially unattested, but colonial sources suggest it was very similar to Classic Taíno, and was spoken in the westernmost areas of Hispaniola, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and most of Cuba. By the late 15th century, Taíno had displaced earlier languages, except in western Cuba and pockets in Hispaniola. ''Taínos'' is a 2005 Puerto Rican film written and directed by Benjamín López. The film follows Sara Cordero (Miró), a young archaeology student, who organizes an expedition to La Mora Cave in the town of Comerío with three friends. A young and mysterious man called Yabey (Reyes) offers to guide her expedition. As they venture deeper into the forest, they discover a tribe of Taíno Indians living away from civilization. This event and other circumstances spark a series of conflicts that divide and endanger the whole group. Eric Taino (born March 18, 1975 in Jersey City, New Jersey, United States) is a retired ATP Tour American tennis player, who later represented the Philippines in international competition. Before turning pro, he was the #1 player and captain of the then #2 nationally ranked UCLA tennis team and achieved All-American honors. His teammates included fellow pros Justin Gimelstob and Kevin Kim. As a junior player, he won the 1992 US Open – Boys' Doubles with Jimmy Jackson by defeating the Chileans future World no. 1 singles player Marcelo Ríos and Gabriel Silberstein. He started a professional career in 1997 and achieved the highest ranking of World No. 122 as a singles player on the ATP Tour in November 2003.
