Tawata Productions
Tawata Productions is contemporary Māori and Pasifika performing arts company established in 2004 based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington), New Zealand. They produce theatre, screen and digital work as well as the festivals: Kia Mau, Breaking Ground and the Pūtahi Festival. Tawata showcases work by Māori, Pasifika and Indigenous writers and makers and is led by Hone Kouka and Mīria George. Hone Kouka
Hone Vivian Kouka is a New Zealand playwright. He has written 13 plays, which have been staged in New Zealand and worldwide including Canada, South Africa, New Caledonia and Britain. Kouka's plays have won multiple awards at the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards, the 'Oscars' of New Zealand theatre. Kouka has also worked as a theatre director and producer. In 2009, Kouka was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to contemporary Māori theatre. Background Born in Balclutha in New Zealand's South Island, Kouka graduated in English from the University of Otago in 1988. Jason Te Kare
Jason Te Kare is a New Zealand director, playwright and actor. Early life and education Te Kare graduated from Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School in 2001 with a Bachelor of Performing Arts (Acting). Work Te Kare played Ty in the premiere Downstage Theatre production of Hone Kouka's '' The Prophet'' in 1994, directed by Nina Nawalowalo. He made his professional debut as Boyboy in the premiere production of Hone Kouka's play ''Waiora'' at the Hannah Playhouse in Wellington in March 1996. Te Kare co-wrote the play ''Cellfish'' with Miriama McDowell and Rob Mokaraka. Whiti Hereaka
Whiti Hereaka (born 1978) is a New Zealand playwright, novelist and screenwriter and a barrister and solicitor. She has held a number of writing residencies and appeared at literary festivals in New Zealand and overseas, and several of her books and plays have been shortlisted for or won awards. In 2022 her book ''Kurangaituku'' won the prize for fiction at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards and ''Bugs'' won an Honour Award in the 2014 New Zealand Post Awards for Children and Young Adults. Atamira Dance Company
Atamira Dance Company is a Māori contemporary dance company in Aotearoa (New Zealand) based at the Corban Estate Arts Centre in Auckland. History In 2000, the company was founded from a vision of Jack Gray's for a collective of young Māori dancers and choreographers to present dance projects relative to their shared cultural heritage and perspective. The founding members were Gray, Dolina Wehipeihana, Louise Potiki Bryant and Justine Hohaia. The four met during 1999 while Gray and Wehipeihana were studying contemporary dance at UNITEC, subsequently becoming acquainted with Hohaia and Bryant at a tertiary dance festival. The Māori Sidesteps
The Māori Sidesteps are a New Zealand musical and performance group founded by Jamie McCaskill in 2016, based in Wellington. The band reinterprets the musical tradition of Māori showbands such as The Quin Tikis, the Hi Fives, and the Howard Morrison Quartet. They perform musical skits and songs, some with lyrics changed to parody and satirise issues arising from the colonisation of New Zealand. Members of the group have included Regan Taylor, Rob Mokaraka (Former Member), Cohen Holloway, Jamie McCaskill, Erroll Anderson and Jerome Leota. The costumes for the band were designed by Suzanne Tamaki. Taki Rua
Taki Rua is a theatre organisation based in Wellington, Aotearoa / New Zealand that has produced many contemporary Māori theatre productions. Taki Rua has been going since 1983 and has had several name changes over that time including The New Depot, Depot Theatre and Taki Rua / The Depot. The full current name is Taki Rua Productions. Since inception the mission of Taki Rua has been to showcase work from Aotearoa. Modern Māori Quartet
The Modern Māori Quartet (MMQ) is a showband musical group from New Zealand. The group comprises core members James Tito, Matariki Whatarau, Maaka Pohatu and Francis Kora, with occasional rotation of the lineup depending on availability of the performers or to allow simultaneous tours. Founding member Matu Ngaropo shifted from performing to acting as the group's musical director/dramaturg. Other performers who had been part of the group include Rutene Spooner, Tainui Kuru and Jamie McCaskill. The group aims to put a contemporary spin on Māori showbands of earlier decades such as the Howard Morrison Quartet and the Maori Volcanics Showband, as well as capturing the spirit of the Māori "garage party".
