Tasiusaq, Kujalleq
Tasiusaq is a settlement in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland, founded in 1933. It is located at the Tasermiut Fjord ( da, Ketils Fjord), east of Nanortalik. Its population was 53 in 2020. In the Greenlandic language, the name of the settlement means "like a lake", referring to the lake-looking bay it situated on. The inhabitants call it "Tasiisaq", which is the local dialect. There are several sheep farms in the wider Tasiusaq area; the farms of ''Nalasut'' with 10 inhabitants, ''Saputit'' with 3 inhabitants, and ''Nuugaarsuk'' with four inhabitants. Until January 2009 the settlement belonged to the Nanortalik municipality. On 1 January 2009 the settlement became part of the Kujalleq municipality, when the Narsaq, Qaqortoq, and Nanortalik municipalities ceased to exist as administrative entities. Tasersuaq Lake
Tasersuaq (old spelling: ''Taserssuaq'') is a large lake in the Qeqqata municipality in central-western Greenland. The name of the lake means ''large lake'' in the Greenlandic language, and is a common name shared by several lakes in the country. Geography Tasersuaq is a latitudinal lake of elongated sausage shape, extending from approximately in the west to in the east, located halfway between Sisimiut in the west and Kangerlussuaq in the east, approximately east of the former, and west of the latter. In the northwest the lake is bounded by tall mountains of the Pingu mountain group. The range flattens considerably towards the east in the area of Kangaamiut dike swarm north of Kangerlussuaq, due to pressure exerted by the Greenland ice sheet ( kl, Sermersuaq) for long periods in the past. Qinngua Valley
Qinngua Valley, also called Qinnquadalen, Kanginsap Qinngua and Paradisdalen, is a valley in Greenland, about from the nearest settlement of Tasiusaq, Kujalleq. The valley has the only natural forest in Greenland and is about long, running roughly north to south and terminating at Tasersuag Lake. The lake drains into Tasermiut Fjord. Mountains rise as much as on either side of the narrow valley. The valley is situated about from the sea and protected from the cold winds coming off the interior glaciers of Greenland. In total, over 300 species of plants grow in the valley. The forest in Qinngua Valley is a thicket consisting mainly of downy birch ('' Betula pubescens'') and gray-leaf willow ('' Salix glauca''), growing up to tall. Nanortalik
Nanortalik (), formerly Nennortalik, is a town in Nanortalik Island, Kujalleq municipality, southern Greenland. With 1,185 inhabitants as of 2020, it is the eleventh-largest town in the country. The name ''Nanortalik'' means "Place of Polar Bears" or "Place Where the Polar Bears Go" (from kl, nanoq). It is the southernmost town in Greenland with a population of over 1,000. History Because of its location, this area was one of the first parts of Greenland settled by the Norse and one of the last settled by the Inuit. The town was founded in 1770 as Nennortalik. Tasermiut Fjord
Tasermiut Fjord is a 70-kilometre-long fjord in southwestern Greenland. Administratively it is part of the Kujalleq municipality. Nanortalik Island is located near the mouth of the fjord. Tasermiut Fjord has some of the very few growths of dwarf trees in Greenland, notably in Qinngua Valley and Tiningnertoq valley. Geography The fjord is oriented in a roughly NE/SW direction, to the southwest the fjord opens into the Labrador Sea of the North Atlantic Ocean. It separates two long mountainous peninsulas, the 1,590 m high Napasorsuaq peak rising in the peninsula to the west of the fjord. To the east rise the 1,858 m high Ulamertorsuaq, the 2,045 m high Nalumasortoq and the 2,010 m high Ketil. The glacier at the inland end of this fjord has been undergoing a well documented recession in recent history.
