Tartu Railway Station
Tartu railway station ( et, Tartu raudteejaam) is the main railway station in Tartu, Estonia. Tartu railway station is situated west of the centre Tartu. It was established in 1876 when Tapa–Tartu route was built. The station building was opened in 1877. Passenger trains are operated by Elron and most services are towards Tallinn. There are also services to Valga and to Jõgeva, Orava, Koidula and Piusa. There are two platforms with the length of 260m and 330m. Edelaraudtee (''Southwestern railway'') is an Estonian railway operator founded in 1997. AS Edelaraudtee operates freight services on lines from Tallinn to Rapla, Pärnu & Viljandi owned by Edelaraudtee Infrastruktuuri AS. Until 2014, the company operated the domestic inter-city passenger routes currently operated by Elron. Before the transfer of the passenger traffic, the company employed around 500 staff and carried approximately 1.8 m passengers a year. The rail transport system in Estonia consists of about of railway lines, of which are currently in public use. The infrastructure of the railway network is mostly owned by the state and is regulated and surveyed by the Estonian Technical Surveillance Authority ( et, Tehnilise Järelevalve Amet).
