Tanga (film)
''Tanga (Deu no New York Times?)'' is a 1987 Brazilian comedy film directed by the comic artist Henfil and written by him and Joffre Rodrigues. Synopsis The setting is Tanga, a small miserable island with an illiteracy rate of 99%. The country is headed by Herr Walkyria Von Mariemblau (Rubens Corrêa). Each day, a copy of ''The New York Times'' is delivered to the dictator, the only such copy available on the island. After he reads each day's newspaper, he incinerates it to prevent it from falling into the hands of communist guerrillas, who covet the newspaper, sharing his belief that "knowledge is power."At one time the phrase "deu no New York Times" ("it was in The New York Times") was a colloquialism used in Brazil to mean that something was undoubtedly true. Henrique de Souza Filho (5 February 1944 – 4 January 1988), commonly known as Henfil, was a Brazilian cartoonist, caricaturist, journalist and writer, born in Ribeirão das Neves, Minas Gerais. Biography He was a contributor to the satirical newspaper "O Pasquim", which began publication in response to press censorship in Brazil following the military crackdown of December 1968. In 1970 he published the comic book "Os Fradinhos" (The Friars), starring his most acclaimed characters. It was the first Brazilian comic book to be published in other countries. Henfil also worked in theater, film, television and literature, but political activism was his hallmark, creating fictional characters that made acerbic criticisms of the Brazilian political institutions of the time. A haemophiliac, Henfil contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion and died as a result of the disease in Rio de Janeiro. Cinemateca Brasileira
The Cinemateca Brasileira is the institution responsible for preserving Brazilian audiovisual production. In July 2021, it experienced a major fire. Since 1940, it has been developing activities around the dissemination and restoration of its collection, with around 250 thousand rolls of films and more than one million documents related to cinema. It is located in Largo Senador Raul Cardoso, São Paulo. The building previously acted as the Old Municipal Slaughterhouse of São Paulo from 1887 to 1927. It had the largest collection of "moving images" in Latin America and is one of the largest institutions of its kind in the world. It preserved a large part of the nation's cinematographic content and houses the greatest collection of Brazilian cinema, with more than 250,000 rolls of film. Alan Riding (born 8 December 1943, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is a British author and journalist. He was a long-time foreign correspondent for ''The New York Times'', most recently as the paper's European Cultural Correspondent based in Paris. His latest book is ''And The Show Went On: Cultural Life in Nazi-Occupied Paris''. Early life After spending his first 11 years in Brazil, Riding went to England to attend Rossall School, Lancashire, and later Bristol University. Zózimo Bulbul
Zózimo Bulbul (September 21, 1937 – January 24, 2013) was a Brazilian actor, filmmaker, and activist. Bulbul was a prominent proponent of Afro-Brazilian culture within Brazilian cinema and society at-large. Bulbul co-founded and organized the Encontro de Cinema Negro Brasil, África & Américas, which showcases films featuring African and Afro-Brazilian actors, directors, and themes. Bulbul made his film debut in the 1962 Brazilian motion picture, '' Cinco Vezes Favela''. He went on to star in more than thirty films throughout his career, including ''Quilombo'' and '' Sagarana: The Duel''. Bulbul was also a filmmaker and film director. His best known work was his ''Abolição'', which he released in 1988. Through ''Abolição'', Bulbul explored the 100th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Brazil. Chico Anysio (born Francisco Anysio de Oliveira Paula Filho, 12 April 1931 – 23 March 2012) was a Brazilian actor, comedian, writer and composer. Biography Anysio was born in Maranguape, Ceará. He moved with the family to Rio de Janeiro when he was 7 years old, and tried to work on ''Rádio Guanabara''. Since 1968 was joined to Rede Globo, which achieved the status of a star cast that boasted the most famous artists of Brazil. Anysio was one of the most famous Brazilian comedians of all times and is considered the greatest Brazilian comedian ever. He died on 23 March 2012, aged 80, in Samaritano Hospital, Rio de Janeiro, from multiple organ failure.
