Taney Place is a historic home located at Adelina, Maryland, Adelina, Calvert County, Maryland, Calvert County, Maryland, United States. It is a simple, two-story, hip roof, hip-roofed, Georgian architecture, Georgian-style country house, dating from about 1750. It was the birthplace and childhood home of Roger Brooke Taney (1777–1864), who served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1836 to 1864. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Calvert County is located in the U.S. state of Maryland. As of the 2020 census, the population was 92,783. Its county seat is Prince Frederick. The county's name is derived from the family name of the Barons of Baltimore, the proprietors of the English Colony of Maryland Calvert County is included in the Washington–Arlington–Alexandria, DC–VA–MD–WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hip Roof
A hip roof, hip-roof or hipped roof, is a type of roof where all sides slope downwards to the walls, usually with a fairly gentle slope (although a tented roof by definition is a hipped roof with steeply pitched slopes rising to a peak). It is named after the first four British monarchs of the House of Hanover—George I, George II, George III, and George IV—who reigned in continuous succession from August 1714 to June 1830. Roger Brooke Taney
Roger Brooke Taney (; March 17, 1777 – October 12, 1864) was the fifth chief justice of the United States, holding that office from 1836 until his death in 1864. Although an opponent of slavery, believing it to be an evil practice, Taney believed that it was not the place of the Court or the Federal Government to remedy the issue and that it was the Constitutional right of the states to deal with slavery individually and gradually. Taney infamously delivered the majority opinion in ''Dred Scott v. Sandford'' (1857), ruling that African Americans could not be considered U.S. citizens and that Congress could not prohibit Slavery in the United States, slavery in the U.S. territories.
