Tall Poppies Records
Tall Poppies Records is an Australian record label founded in September 1991 by Belinda Webster. It focuses on recording solo and chamber music in the classical genre. It is particularly dedicated to promoting the work of Australian composers. The name of the label derives from the "tall poppy syndrome", because those involved feel that, in Australia, there is a tendency to criticise or downplay those who achieve success. Chamber Music
Chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments—traditionally a group that could fit in a palace chamber or a large room. Most broadly, it includes any art music that is performed by a small number of performers, with one performer to a part (in contrast to orchestral music, in which each string part is played by a number of performers). However, by convention, it usually does not include solo instrument performances. Because of its intimate nature, chamber music has been described as "the music of friends". For more than 100 years, chamber music was played primarily by amateur musicians in their homes, and even today, when chamber music performance has migrated from the home to the concert hall, many musicians, amateur and professional, still play chamber music for their own pleasure. Bruce Cale
Bruce Cale (born 17 February 1939, Leura) is an Australian jazz double-bassist and composer. Career Cale began studying music at age nine, and worked professionally in Sydney from 1958. He worked with Bryce Rohde's quartet from 1962–65, then moved to England, where he played with Tubby Hayes, Dudley Moore, and was a founding member of John Stevens's Spontaneous Music Ensemble. After obtaining a scholarship, he attended the Berklee College of Music starting in 1966 and remained in the U.S. until 1977, where he played with Ernie Watts and John Handy among others. While in Los Angeles in 1974, he composed the piece ''Iron Cross'' for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The piece led to further commissions, and in 1976 he completed a work dedicated to John Coltrane for voice, jazz ensemble, and symphony orchestra. Richard Goldner
Richard Goldner (23 June 1908 – 27 September 1991) was a Romanian-born, Viennese-trained Australian violist, pedagogue and inventor. He founded Musica Viva Australia in 1945, which became the world's largest entrepreneurial chamber music organisation. The Goldner String Quartet was named in his memory. Sydney Chamber Choir
Sydney Chamber Choir is a choir from Sydney formed as the Sydney University Chamber Choir in 1975. Following its formation in 1975, the Sydney Chamber Choir quickly established itself as a champion of Renaissance Music, especially the works of Josquin des Prez. Under the leadership of founding director Nicholas Routley, the choir was also a pioneer in revitalising Sydney performances of Bach and Handel. At the same time, the Sydney Chamber Choir began a program of commissioning new music from Australian composers, a tradition which continues today with world premieres of works by Nigel Butterley, Clare Maclean and Paul Stanhope occurring in recent seasons. The Sydney Chamber Choir has toured widely in eastern Australia and performed in the UK. David Bollard
David Bollard (born 25 September 1942) is a New Zealand-born Australian classical pianist and teacher. Career David Bollard studied with Béla Síki in 1962, then moved to London in 1964, studying with Ilona Kabos, Louis Kentner and Julius Katchen. After a successful Wigmore Hall debut, BBC broadcasts and concerts in Europe, he moved to Australia in 1970. He was a founding member of the Australia Ensemble, resident at the University of New South Wales, and performed and recorded with them for 19 years (1980-1998). He also toured with visiting artists such as violinists Wanda Wiłkomirska, Edith Peinemann and Dylana Jenson, and singers Rotraud Hansmann, Robert Gard and Beverley Bergen. Roy Howat
Roy Howat (born 1951, Ayrshire, Scotland) is a Scottish pianist and musicologist, who specializes in French music. Howat has been Keyboard Research Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music in London since 2003, and Research Fellow at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland since 2013. Personal life Howat's mother was Czech, his father Scots. He was educated at Ardrossan Academy in Ayrshire and King's College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a first-class degree in Music in 1974. He has also studied under Vlado Perlemuter in Paris. Riley Lee
Riley Kelly Lee (born 1951) is an American-born Australian-based shakuhachi player and teacher. In 1980 he became the first non-Japanese person to attain the rank of Dai Shihan (grand master) in the shakuhachi tradition. He is a recipient of two of the most revered lineages of shakuhachi playing, descending from the original Zen Buddhist "priests of nothingness" of the Edo period (1600-1868 CE). His first teachers were Hoshida Ichizan II and Chikuho Sakai II. A later teacher was Katsuya Yokoyama. Personal life Riley Lee was born in Plainview, Texas, of a Chinese father and Caucasian mother. Geoffrey Lancaster
Geoffrey Lancaster (born 20 August 1954) is an Australian classical pianist and conductor. Born in Sydney, he was raised in Dubbo, New South Wales before moving to Canberra. He attended the Canberra School of Music where he studied piano with Larry Sitsky. He also studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy, and also completed a master's degree at the University of Tasmania. In 1984, he moved to Amsterdam to study fortepiano with Stanley Hoogland at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. In 1996 he was a professor at the Royal College of Music in London, following which he worked at the School of Music at the University of Western Australia. Stephanie McCallum
Stephanie McCallum (born 3 March 1956) is a classical pianist. She has recorded works of Erik Satie, Ludwig van Beethoven, Charles-Valentin Alkan, Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann, Carl Maria von Weber, Albéric Magnard, Pierre Boulez, and Iannis Xenakis among others. Life McCallum was born in Sydney in 1956. She studied with Alexander Sverjensky and Gordon Watson at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. After further study with Ronald Smith in the UK, she gave her debut concert at Wigmore Hall in 1982. Michael Kieran Harvey
Michael Kieran Harvey (born 7 July 1961) is an Australian pianist and composer whose career has been notable for its diversity and wide repertoire. He is renowned for commissioning, performing and composing new music. He has especially promoted the works of Australian composers, such as Carl Vine, most of whose piano music he has recorded and much of which was written for him. He is also particularly associated with the piano music of Olivier Messiaen. Lisa Moore (born 1960) is an Australian/American internationally renowned pianist. Moore was born in Canberra, Australia, one of three children to an art historian and a prominent economist. Her early life included overseas travel, and by the age of 16, she had visited more than a dozen countries and lived in Sydney and London. Moore's development as an artist can be traced to her formative years in Canberra during the 1970s. A succession of "strange and interesting people" through her childhood included the Australian painter Charles Blackman. Moore was raised in both Australia and London (1971–73). Ian Munro (born 1963) is an Australian pianist, composer, writer and music educator. His career has taken him to over 30 countries in Europe, Asia, North America and Australasia. Biography Ian Munro was born in Melbourne in 1963, and attended Scotch College (1975–80) and the Victorian College of the Arts (1981–83).
