Talerddig
Talerddig is a village in Powys, mid Wales, located on the main A470 road between Llanbrynmair and Carno. It is part of Llanbrynmair community. Talerddig cutting Although the village no longer has a railway station, it is on the route of the 1863 constructed Newtown and Machynlleth Railway. The route passes through Talerddig cutting, a significant civil engineering achievement of the 1860s being deep and cut through solid rock, and the deepest in the world at the time of its completion in 1862. There was an accident in the cutting on 18 January 1921, of which several pictures survive. There remains a passing loop today on the single track Cambrian Line where railway station existed until 1965. The Newtown and Machynlleth Railway was a railway company in Wales. It built a line from a junction with the Llanidloes and Newtown Railway near Caersws to the market town of Machynlleth; the line opened in 1862. Newtown had become the hub of railway lines in the district. Machynlleth was an important town, and extension from there to Aberystwyth and to the coast northward was in the minds of the promoters. The topography of the district was challenging, and a practicable line had to be routed north of the most mountainous region, and climb steeply. There was a summit at Talerddig, above sea level; a rock cutting was made at the summit, to mitigate the climb on the approaches. Another company, the Aberystwith and Welsh Coast Railway, built the line connecting Machynlleth to Aberystwyth, and also to Porthmadog and Pwllheli, and the Newtown and Machynlleth Railway company itself was incorporated into the Cambrian Railways company in 1864. A470 Road
The A470 (also named the Cardiff to Glan Conwy Trunk Road) is a trunk road in Wales. It is the country's longest road at and links the capital Cardiff on the south coast to Llandudno on the north coast. While previously one had to navigate the narrow roads of Llanidloes and Dolgellau, both these market towns are now bypassed due to extensive road modernisation. Llanbrynmair () is a village, community and electoral ward in Montgomeryshire, Powys, on the A470 road between Caersws and Machynlleth. Llanbrynmair, in area, is the second largest in Powys. Carno
Carno is a village in Powys, Wales. The community, which is also a parish in the historic county of Montgomeryshire, comprises the townships of Derlwyn, Llysyn, and Trowscoed. It is in the geographical centre of Wales. Geography The Afon Carno rises near the watershed with the Afon Dyfi; and runs 9 miles south-eastward to the River Severn, 2ΒΌ miles north of Llandinam.
