Take That (TV Series)
''Take That'' was one of the earliest Australian television series. It debuted in late 1957 and ran till March 1959. As was often the case with early Australian television, it aired only on a single station, in this case HSV-7, in Melbourne. Program synopsis and significance ''Take That'' was a slapstick comedy series set in an unruly schoolroom; one of the earliest such series produced for Australian television, and is sometimes considered to be Australia’s first, regularly scheduled sitcom. The series was produced by Crawford Productions, who made several other pioneering 1950s series, like the game show '' Wedding Day'' and the children's show ''Peters Club'' (also featuring Joff Ellen), at the Channel 7 studios in Dorcas Street, South Melbourne, before live audiences. Sitcom
A sitcom, a portmanteau of situation comedy, or situational comedy, is a genre of comedy centered on a fixed set of characters who mostly carry over from episode to episode. Sitcoms can be contrasted with sketch comedy, where a troupe may use new characters in each sketch, and stand-up comedy, where a comedian tells jokes and stories to an audience. Sitcoms originated in radio, but today are found mostly on television as one of its dominant narrative forms. A situation comedy television program may be recorded in front of a studio audience, depending on the program's production format. The effect of a live studio audience can be imitated or enhanced by the use of a laugh track. Critics disagree over the utility of the term "sitcom" in classifying shows that have come into existence since the turn of the century. Peters Club
''Peters Club'' was an Australian children's television series which reportedly debuted in 1958, and aired on GTV-9, running into 1959. At the time, many Australian TV series were only broadcast on a single station instead of being networked, which may have also been the case with the series. Cast included Rod McLennan, Judy Banks and the comedian Joff Ellen, who was concurrently playing a schoolboy on the early sitcom ''Take That.'' There is very little information available on this show but it is known that the now-defunct ''Truth'' newspaper gave it an award for "Best Children's Show - Melbourne Television". Notably, it was produced by Crawford Productions. The title, without a possessive apostrophe, referenced the sponsor - Peters Ice Cream (which also used the TV clowns Zig and Zag, who wore ice cream cone hats on HSV-7). ABC TV, formerly known as ABC1, is an Australian national public television network. It is owned and operated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and is the flagship ABC Television network. ''Barley Charlie'' was an Australian television sitcom which aired in 1964. It was the second television sitcom produced in Australia; being preceded by the 1957-1959 series ''Take That (TV series), Take That'', although that Crawford Productions sitcom had only aired in Melbourne. Some of the creatives went on to be involved in the serial drama ''Undercurrent (Australian TV series), Undercurrent'' (1965). ''The Hit Parade'' was an early Australian television pop music series which aired on the Seven Network's HSV-7 from 1956 to 1959. It is often mentioned in books discussing Australian television of the 1950s. The Adventures Of Rin Tin Tin
''The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin'' is an American children's television series in the Western genre that aired from October 1954 to May 1959 on the ABC television network. In all, 164 episodes aired. The show starred Lee Aaker as Rusty, a boy orphaned in an Indian raid, who was being raised by the soldiers at a US Cavalry post known as Fort Apache. Rusty and his German shepherd dog, Rin Tin Tin, help the soldiers to establish order in the American West. James E. Brown appeared as Lieutenant Ripley "Rip" Masters. Co-stars included Joe Sawyer as Sergeant Biff O'Hara and Rand Brooks as Corporal Randy Boone. The character of Rin Tin Tin was named after Rin Tin Tin, a legendary screen dog of the 1920s and 30s. ''Teenage Mailbag'' was an Australian television series which aired in 1957 to 1958 on Melbourne station HSV-7. Information on this series is scarce. According to a 2008 article in ''The Age'', the format consisted of Ernie Sigley, Gaynor Bunning and Heather Horwood singing requested songs in a 15-minute slot, and later expanded to an hour. The one-hour version became the series ''The Teenage Show'' (1958-1960?). At one point, the series aired at 7:15PM, preceded by another 15-minute series titled ''Take That'' and followed by an American program (''The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin''). Kinescope
Kinescope , shortened to kine , also known as telerecording in Britain, is a recording of a television program on motion picture film, directly through a lens focused on the screen of a video monitor. The process was pioneered during the 1940s for the preservation, re-broadcasting and sale of television programmes before the introduction of quadruplex videotape, which from 1956 eventually superseded the use of kinescopes for all of these purposes. Kinescopes were the only practical way to preserve live television broadcasts prior to videotape. Typically, the term Kinescope can refer to the process itself, the equipment used for the procedure (a movie camera mounted in front of a video monitor, and synchronized to the monitor's scanning rate), or a film made using the process.
