Tainan (), officially Tainan City, is a special municipality in southern Taiwan facing the Taiwan Strait on its western coast. Tainan is the oldest city on the island and also commonly known as the "Capital City" for its over 200 years of history as the capital of Taiwan under Koxinga and later Qing rule. Tainan's complex history of comebacks, redefinitions and renewals inspired its popular nickname "the Phoenix City". Tainan is classified as a "Sufficiency" level global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. As Taiwan's oldest urban area, Tainan was initially established by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a ruling and trading base called Fort Zeelandia during the period of Dutch rule on the island. Special municipality, historically known as Yuan-controlled municipality is a first-level administrative division unit in the Republic of China (Taiwan). Under the administrative structure of Taiwan, it is the highest level of division in Taiwan and is equivalent to a province. Since the streamlining of provinces in 1998, the special municipalities along with provincial cities and counties have all been directly under the central government. Currently total six cities are designated as special municipalities: Taipei, New Taipei City, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung, all located in the most densely populated regions in the western half of the island. Guantian District
Guantian District () is a rural district in central Tainan, Taiwan. It is the hometown of former Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian. It hosts a population of 20,874 residents. History Guantian (官田) was formerly known as the "Guantian" (官佃). During Dutch rule, this area belonged to the government as "Wang Tian" (王田). During Ming Zheng rule, Wang Tian was changed to "Guantian", and the land was handed over to the civil and military officials, who can then recruit the farmers. Among them, the Chen Yonghua family had the most commitments and gradually formed a Han Chinese settlement, hence the name "Guantian" (官佃). Under the Qing rule, it became "Guantian village" (官佃庄). Yujing District
Yujing District () is a rural district in eastern Tainan, Taiwan. It is famous for its cultivation of mangoes. After a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit southern Taiwan in March 2010, pillars were severely damaged at Yujing Junior High School forcing school officials to cancel some classes. History Yujing, was formerly known as (or in Dutch records after 1650's; transliterated as ) in Taivoan, is likely the site of tribe of , a former political unit of the Taiwanese aborigines. Anding District () is a rural district of about 29,983 residents in Tainan, Taiwan, with a area of 31.27 square kilometers, or 12.0734 square miles. It is the 17th most populous district in Tainan, with a population density of 959 people per square kilometer, or 2,483 people per square mile. History During the Dutch colonial era the area was known as Bakloan or Baccloan, with a rarer spelling of Baccaluang. Sinshih District, United States National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (), alternatively spelled Xinshi, is a rural district in central Tainan, Taiwan, about 11 km north of Fort Provintia. As ''Sincan'', it was one of the most important stations of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the 17th century. Shanhua District
Shanhua District () is a suburban district of Tainan, Taiwan. Until 25 December 2010, it was an urban township in the dissolved Tainan County, which is now merged with the original Tainan City to form a single special municipality. History Shanhua was inhabited by the Taiwanese aboriginal tribe of Siraya, who called it Bakaloan (transliterated into ) (see also Anding, bordering to the southwest). It was one of the four major towns established by the tribe. In 1625, the Dutch East India Company was driven back by the aborigines while trying to collect bamboo. The Dutch, however, were able to conquer the town in 1635, and started setting up schools and churches in the area, calling the place Tevoran (see modern-day Yujing). Sinhua District, United States National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (), alternatively spelled Xinhua, is a suburban district in central Tainan, Taiwan. History Before the Dutch and Han Chinese invaded, this region was home to a community of Taiwanese aborigines, the Siraya. Cigu District
Cigu District, United States National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency or Qigu is a rural district in the city of Tainan with about 21,606 inhabitants, situated on the westernmost point of the island of Taiwan. The Cigu Lagoon is located in this township, and an ecological conservation area for black-faced spoonbills is situated on the estuary of the Zengwen River. It was a salt producing area, but now most of the salt products are imported from other counties. History Around 360 years ago, seven settlers arrived in the area from Fujian and built a fish farm.
