Swiss Family Robinson (1940 Film)
''Swiss Family Robinson'' is a 1940 American film released by RKO Radio Pictures and directed by Edward Ludwig. It is based on the 1812 novel ''The Swiss Family Robinson'' by Johann David Wyss and is the first feature-length film version of the story. Plot In London in 1813, a Swiss father, William Robinson, wishes to escape the influence of the superficial profligacy of London on his family. His eldest son, Fritz, is obsessed with Napoleon, whom he considers his hero. His middle son, Jack, is a foolish dandy who cares only about fashion and money. And his dreamy son Ernest is preoccupied with reading and writing to the exclusion of all else. William Robinson sells his business and house, in order to move with his wife and four sons to Australia. They set out on a brig bound for the faraway country. Edward Ludwig
Edward Irving Ludwig (October 7, 1899 – August 20, 1982) was a Russian-born American film director and writer. He directed nearly 100 films between 1921 and 1963 (some under the names Edward I. Luddy and Charles Fuhr). Ludwig was also one of the directors of John Payne's NBC western series '' The Restless Gun'' (1957-1959). Ludwig and Erle C. Kenton were the principal directors of the CBS television series, '' The Texan'' (1958-1960), starring Rory Calhoun as a "Robin Hood of the West" who drifts through the region helping persons in need. ''The Texan'' in its first season ran opposite ''The Restless Gun'' in its second and last season. Christian Rub
Christian Rub (pronounced ''Rhoob''; April 13, 1886 – April 14, 1956) was an Austrian-born American character actor. He was known for his work in films of the late 1910s to the early 1950s, and was featured in more than 100 films. Biography He was born in Graz, in Austria-Hungary. His first appearance was in the 1919 movie '' The Belle of New York''. Rub was the visual basis for and voice of Geppetto in the 1940 animated Disney film ''Pinocchio'', as well as voices of kindly old men for MGM, Fox and Warner Bros. cartoons. During the creation of ''Pinocchio,'' Rub was notorious amongst the film's animators for his open and frequent expression of admiration for Adolf Hitler. John Chapin Mosher (June 2, 1892 – September 3, 1942) was an American short story writer as well as the first regularly assigned film critic for ''The New Yorker'', a position he held from 1928 to 1942. Life and career Mosher was born in Ogdensburg, New York, and graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1914. Moving to New York City in 1915, he joined the editorial staff of the general interest magazine ''Every Week'' and became involved in the Greenwich Village theater community, writing the one-act comedy plays ''Sauce for the Emperor'' and ''Bored'', which were staged by the Provincetown Players in 1916–17. During the First World War Mosher served in the shell shock ward of a U.S. Medical Corps hospital in Portsmouth, England. After the war, Mosher traveled around Europe and wrote various freelance articles for magazines before becoming an English instructor at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. ''Harrison's Reports'' was a New York City-based motion picture trade journal published weekly from 1919 to 1962. The typical issue was four letter-size pages sent to subscribers under a second-class mail permit. Its founder, editor and publisher was P. S. Harrison (1880–1966), who previously had been a reviewer for '' Motion Picture News'', in which his column was titled "Harrison’s Exhibitor Reviews". The first issue, dated 5 July 1919, stated that film advertising would not be accepted. A year's subscription cost $10. For more than a year, the type was set by a typewriter. Frank Stanley Nugent (May 27, 1908 – December 29, 1965) was an American screenwriter, journalist, and film reviewer, who wrote 21 film scripts, 11 for director John Ford. He wrote almost a thousand reviews for ''The New York Times'' before leaving journalism for Hollywood.
