Super Giant Slalom Skiing
Super giant slalom, or super-G, is a racing discipline of alpine skiing. Along with the faster downhill, it is regarded as a "speed" event, in contrast to the technical events giant slalom and slalom. It debuted as an official World Cup event during the 1983 season and was added to the official schedule of the World Championships in 1987 and the Winter Olympics in 1988. Much like downhill, a super-G course consists of widely set gates that racers must pass through. The course is set so that skiers must turn more than in downhill, though the speeds are still much higher than in giant slalom (hence the name). Each athlete only has one run to clock the best time. In the Olympics, super-G courses are usually set on the same slopes as the downhill, but with a lower starting point. Irene Epple
Irene Epple-Waigel (; born 18 June 1957) is a German former alpine skier. She won a total of 11 Alpine Skiing World Cup races and two World Cups, in giant slalom and combined (both in 1982). She also won a silver medal at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in giant slalom. In the 1978 FIS Alpine Skiing World Championships at Garmisch-Partenkirchen she won the silver medal in the downhill. On 9 January 1983 she won the first women's World Cup Super-G race, held in Verbier. In 1992 she completed her medical studies in Munich, and in November 1994 married Theo Waigel, who was the German Finance Minister from 1989 to 1998. Sigrid Wolf (born 14 February 1964) is an Austrian former Alpine skier. Career Her first points in the Alpine Skiing World Cup she could gain on 25 March 1982, in the Downhill Race at San Sicario by finishing 14th. Her first "Top Ten" was on 5 March 1983, in the Downhill at Mont Tremblant. She came in the spotlight when she placed fourth in the downhill in Santa Caterina in 1985, being 0.01 sec. behind a medal (there was a tied silver medal between Ariane Ehrat and Katharina Gutensohn. Franck Piccard
Franck Piccard (born 17 September 1965) is a French former Alpine skier. A native of Les Saisies, Piccard won a total of four Alpine skiing World Cup races. At the 1988 Olympics in Calgary he won a gold medal in the Super-G competition (the first winter Olympic gold-medal for a French athlete since ski racer Jean-Claude Killy in 1968, who became a three-times gold-medallist) and a bronze medal in the downhill. Maria Walliser
Maria Walliser (born 27 May 1963) is a Swiss former alpine skier. Career Walliser grew up in Mosnang, the daughter of a wealthy cattle breeder. She made her World Cup debut in 1980. Together with her fellow Swiss Erika Hess, Michela Figini and Vreni Schneider she dominated female alpine skiing during the 1980s. Among her many successes, she won two overall World Cups (1986 and 1987). Walliser also won three world titles in 1987 and 1989, as well as three Olympic medals at 1988 Calgary and 1984 Sarajevo. Walliser retired in 1990 with a World Cup tally of 72 podium finishes, including 25 victories. Pirmin Zurbriggen (born 4 February 1963) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Switzerland. One of the most successful ski racers ever, he won the overall World Cup title four times, an Olympic gold medal in 1988 in Downhill, and nine World Championships medals (4 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze). Biography Zurbriggen was born in Saas-Almagell in the canton of Valais, the son of Alois, an innkeeper, and Ida. His father competed as a ski racer in local competitions in the 1940s and 1950s, but quit the sport after his brother was killed in a training accident. Zurbriggen made his World Cup debut in January 1981, a month before his 18th birthday. Markus Wasmeier (; born 9 September 1963 is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Germany. He was world champion and twice Olympic champion. At the 1985 World Championships at Bormio, Italy, he won the Giant Slalom at age 21, before recording a World Cup victory. Born in Schliersee, Bavaria, West Germany, Wasmeier's first World Cup Race was on 5 February 1983, when he finished 49th in the Downhill Race at St. Anton am Arlberg. Phillip Ferdinand Mahre (born May 10, 1957) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer, widely regarded as one of the greatest American skiers of all time.
