James Paul Czajkowski (born August 20, 1961), better known by his pen name of James Rollins, is an American veterinarian and writer of action-adventure/ thriller, mystery, and techno-thriller novels who gave up his veterinary practice in Sacramento, California to be a full-time author. Rollins' experiences and expertise as an amateur spelunker and a certified scuba diver have provided content for some of his novels, which are often set in underground or underwater locations. Under the pen name James Clemens, he has also published fantasy novels, such as ''Wit'ch Fire'', ''Wit'ch Storm'', ''Wit'ch War'', ''Wit'ch Gate'', ''Wit'ch Star'', ''Shadowfall'' (2005), and ''Hinterland'' (2006). ''The Subterraneans'' is a 1958 novella by Beat Generation author Jack Kerouac. It is a semi-fictional account of his short romance with Alene Lee (1931–1991), an African-American woman, in Greenwich Village, New York. It was the first work of Kerouac’s to be released following the success of '' On the Road''. ''The Subterraneans'' and its following novel,''The Dharma Bums'', both proved to be popular when released in 1958, and are now seen as important works of the Beat Literature. A Hollywood film adaptation would be released in 1960. Background Kerouac met Alene in the late summer of 1953 when she was typing up the manuscripts of William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, in Ginsberg's Lower East Side apartment. In the novella, Kerouac moved the story from New York City to San Francisco and renamed Alene Lee "Mardou Fox". ''Subterranean'' is the first EP by Swedish heavy metal band In Flames, released in 1995. It was remastered and re-released in 2003 by Regain Records and reissued again in 2014, featuring additional tracks. The song "The Inborn Lifeless" is also featured on the album '' The Jester Race'', but with a different name ("Dead God in Me"), different lyrics, an alternate ending, and a slightly different solo. Although drummer Daniel Erlandsson is pictured with the band through certain parts of the EP, he was only a guest, and did not perform on all of the recording. Smack is a Los Angeles pop/rock band formed by singer/guitarist Lantz L'Amour, current L.A. Guns guitarist Stacey Blades, former and now current Blessings bassist Jamie Zimlin, and former Junkyard drummer Patrick Muzingo. Similar to their previous album, ''Wasting Light'' (2011), it was produced by the band with Butch Vig. Subterranean Records
Subterranean Records is an independent record label based in San Francisco, California. Founded by Steve Tupper and a then partner, Michael Fox in 1979, it focused on that city's underground punk and industrial music scene. Subterranean and fellow punk/alt/underground San Francisco label Alternative Tentacles both sprang forth from the DIY punk movement in 1979, and were quite successful on college and community radio stations in the US. These labels helped define the San Francisco punk movement. Subterranean was the more avant garde of the two. While originally just focused on documenting and promoting the SF area, over the years Subterranean has released records by artists from many areas and genres. Like many small DIY labels, Steve Tupper noted that bands were chosen based on his musical tastes. "Subterraneans" is a song by David Bowie, the closing track of his 1977 album '' Low''. As with most of Side 2, "Subterraneans" is mostly instrumental, with brief, obscure lyrics sung near the song's end. "Subterraneans" was first recorded in 1975 and intended for the soundtrack to the 1976 film '' The Man Who Fell to Earth''. It was later revisited during the sessions for ''Low''. Musical characteristics After the '' Station to Station'' sessions ended in November 1975 at Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles, David Bowie recorded "Subterraneans" within those studios in December 1975. The song later received overdubs by Brian Eno. The sleeve notes of ''Low'' credit "Peter and Paul with additional ARP synthesizer and piano".
