Studio Pottery
Studio pottery is pottery made by professional and amateur artists or artisans working alone or in small groups, making unique items or short runs. Dora Billington
Dora May Billington (1890–1968) was an English teacher of pottery, a writer and a studio potter. Her own work explored the possibilities of painting on pottery. Life and career Dora Billington was born into a family of potters in Stoke-on-Trent, specifically Tunstall. From 1905 to 1910 she attended Tunstall School of Art and later Hanley School of Art, becoming a teacher assistant in her final year. Waistel Cooper
Waistel Cooper (19 April 1921 – 15 January 2003) was a British studio potter. Biography Cooper was born in Ayr, Scotland and initially studied painting at Hospitalfield School of Art during 1937 and 1938. At Hospitalfield, Waistel was taught by James Cowie who used Waistel as a model for his masterpiece 'An Outdoor School of Painting', in collection of the Tate Gallery. Waistel's fellow students at Hospitalfield included Robert MacBryde, Robert Colquhoun, Patrick Hennessey and Robert Henderson Blythe. Subsequently, Waistel won a painting scholarship to Edinburgh College of Art, though these studies were interrupted by the war. Cooper first flirted with pottery on a portrait commission in Iceland, and returned to England to set up a pottery studio in the village of Porlock, Somerset in 1950. William Staite Murray
William Staite Murray (1881–1962) was an English studio potter. Biography He was born in Deptford, London and attended pottery classes at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts from 1909 - 1912. He worked with Cuthbert Hamilton, a member of the Vorticist group, at the Yeoman Pottery in Kensington before joining the army in 1915. In 1919, after his military service, he set up his own pottery in Rotherhithe, London in the premises of his brother's engineering and foundry works. Although initially influenced by the avant-garde art of the time he became increasingly interested in early Chinese ceramics, under the influence of which he began making high-fired stoneware in an oil-fired kiln. From Rotherhithe he moved his studio first to Brockley in Kent and then to in 1929 to Bray, Berkshire. Bernard Leach
Bernard Howell Leach (5 January 1887 – 6 May 1979), was a British studio potter and art teacher. He is regarded as the "Father of British studio pottery". Biography Early years (Japan) Leach was born in Hong Kong. His mother Eleanor (née Sharp) died in childbirth. He spent his first three years in Japan with his father, Andrew Leach, until he moved back to Hong Kong in 1890. William Moorcroft (potter)
William Moorcroft (1872-1945) was an English potter who founded the Moorcroft pottery business. Personal details He was born in Burslem, Staffordshire. He studied art at Burslem then in London and Paris. He married Florence Nora Fleay Lovibond (1879-1926) in 1913. They had a daughter, Beatrice (1914) and a son, Walter (1917). He then married, in 1928, Marian Lasenby, who was related to the Lasenby Liberty family who owned the popular department store in London. Sir Edmund Harry Elton, 8th Baronet (3 May 1846 – 17 July 1920) was an English inventor and studio potter noted for his production of Elton Ware at the Clevedon Elton Sunflower Pottery. Martin Brothers
The four Martin Brothers were pottery manufacturers in London from 1873 to 1914. In their own day their Martinware was described as art pottery, and they were one of the earliest potteries making this, but in modern terms they fit better into the studio pottery category, which was invented later. The four brothers (Wallace, Walter, Charles and Edwin) produced a distinctive type of stoneware pottery from the 1870s through to 1914, when their pottery closed, with a little work being produced through to 1923, when the last brother, Robert Wallace Martin, died. Their output included both vessels and figures. They were best known for their bird sculptures and bowls, vessels decorated with sea creatures, and tiles, fashioned in a whimsical but highly skillful style. Castle Hedingham Ware
Castle Hedingham Pottery was an art pottery studio run by Edward Bingham at Castle Hedingham in Essex, England. History Bingham produced his Castle Hedingham Ware from about 1864 until 1901. It was made in a style reminiscent of medieval and Tudor wares. Bingham produced some large items, with 'Essex' jugs up to three feet high being typical. .
