Stuart Hall (presenter)
James Stuart Hall Jr. (born 25 December 1929) is an English former media personality. He presented regional news programmes for the BBC in North West England in the 1960s and 1970s, while becoming known nationally for presenting the game show ''It's a Knockout'' (which was part of the international ''Jeux Sans Frontières'' franchise). Hall's later career mainly involved football reporting on BBC Radio. In June 2013, he was convicted of multiple sexual offences against children, effectively ending his media and broadcasting career. Early life Stuart Hall was born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, the eldest son of baker James Stuart Hall, and his Irish-born wife, Mary (née Hennessey). Ashton-under-Lyne
Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town in Tameside, Greater Manchester, England. The population was 45,198 at the 2011 census. Historically in Lancashire, it is on the north bank of the River Tame, in the foothills of the Pennines, east of Manchester. Evidence of Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Viking activity has been discovered in Ashton-under-Lyne. The "Ashton" part of the town's name probably dates from the Anglo-Saxon period, and derives from Old English meaning "settlement by ash trees". The origin of the "under-Lyne" suffix is less clear; it possibly derives from the Brittonic-originating word ''lemo'' meaning elm or from Ashton's proximity to the Pennines. ''Sports Report'' is one of the longest-running programmes on British radio, and is the world's longest-running sports radio programme. It started on 3 January 1948, and has always been broadcast from 17:00 on Saturday evenings during the football season, for most of its history featuring two readings of the classified football results, although the length of the programme has varied in more recent times depending on whether the BBC has a commentary of a 17:30 Premier League match. Originally produced by Angus Mackay, it was broadcast on the BBC Light Programme until 25 April 1964. On 22 August 1964 it became part of ''Sports Service'' and moved to Network Three (which later became BBC Radio 3) where it initially started at the earlier time of 16:42. The Grand Knockout Tournament
''The Grand Knockout Tournament'' (also known as ''It's a Royal Knockout'') was a one-off charity event which took place on 15 June 1987, and was shown on British television on 19 June 1987 (BBC1, repeated on 27 December 1987), in addition to airing on American TV via the USA Network on 12 August 1987, and European satellite channel Superchannel on 6 March 1988 (repeated on Christmas Day 1988). It followed the format of ''It's a Knockout'' (the British version of ''Jeux sans frontières''), a slapstick TV gameshow which was broadcast in the UK until 1982. The event was staged on the lakeside lawn of the Alton Towers stately home and theme park. Slapstick
Slapstick is a style of humor involving exaggerated physical activity that exceeds the boundaries of normal physical comedy. Slapstick may involve both intentional violence and violence by mishap, often resulting from inept use of props such as saws and ladders. The term arises from a device developed for use in the broad, physical comedy style known as ''commedia dell'arte'' in 16th-century Italy. The "Clapper (musical instrument), slap stick" consists of two thin slats of wood, which make a "slap" when striking another actor, with little force needed to make a loud—and comical—sound. The physical slap stick remains a key component of the plot in the traditional and popular Punch and Judy puppet show. BBC One is a British free-to-air public broadcast television network owned and operated by the BBC. Channel M News was a regional television news service covering the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester, North West England produced by Channel M, partly in conjunction with the Manchester Evening News. History Launched in 2004, ''Channel M News'' aired each weekday evening alongside a weekly review programme and occasional documentary specials. Breakfast, lunchtime and late evening news bulletins were also produced throughout the programme's run. Channel M was a regional television station, serving Greater Manchester. The station, originally known as ''Manchester Student Television'', was owned and operated by the GMG Regional Media division of Guardian Media Group. Coverage Originally an RSL station, Channel M was primarily available free-to-air on terrestrial in parts of Greater Manchester. In 2004 Channel M launched on the NTL (now part of Virgin Media) digital cable platform, around Greater Manchester, mid-Lancashire and Cheshire. Bob Greaves (28 November 193414 March 2011) was an English journalist and broadcaster, best known as a long-serving reporter, presenter and producer for Granada Television for 35 years. Robert Morgan Greaves was born in Sale, Cheshire and educated at the local Sale Boys' Grammar School, but did not attend university. He began his career working on the local newspaper, the ''Sale and Stretford Guardian'', and later on the ''Nottingham Evening News'', then at the ''Daily Mail'' at its Manchester office. John Mundy (presenter)
John Mundy is a British broadcaster and voice-over artist, best known as a long-serving presenter of the regional news programme ''BBC North West Tonight'' and its previous incarnations as ''Look North'' and ''Look North West''. Mundy started in 'the business' first, as a stage-hand at the Opera House in Manchester and then as an actor at Oldham's Coliseum Theatre. His television career began with a live 'on-air' audition as a continuity announcer for Tyne Tees Television. He also announced for HTV (forerunner of ITV Wales and West) before joining BBC North West in 1974. Mundy worked as a regional continuity announcer on weekday evenings and presented news bulletins, alternating duties with Christine Burn.
