Staveley Central Railway Station
Staveley Central was a railway station serving the town of Staveley, Derbyshire, England. History The station was on the Great Central Main Line which ran between London Marylebone and Manchester via Sheffield Victoria. It was opened on 1 June 1892 as Staveley Town and was renamed Staveley Central on 25 September 1950 by British Railways to reduce confusion with the ex-MR station, also called Staveley Town, which was about 250 yards away on the same street. The latter station was on the Barrow Hill to Clowne and Barrow Hill to Pleasley West lines. The renaming also reduced the likelihood of people confusing the station with that at Barrow Hill and Staveley Works, which was officially renamed Barrow Hill on 18 June 1951 to further differentiate the stations. Staveley Central closed on 4 March 1963, but continued to serve summer weekend excursion traffic until the end of the 1964 season. Trans-Pennine Trail
The Trans Pennine Trail is a long-distance path running from coast to coast across Northern England entirely on surfaced paths and using only gentle gradients (it runs largely along disused railway lines and towpath, canal towpaths). It forms part of European walking route E8 and is part of the National Cycle Network as National Cycle Route 62, Route 62 (referencing the M62 motorway which also crosses the Pennines). Most of the surfaces and gradients make it a relatively easy trail, suitable for cyclists, pushchairs and wheelchair users. The section between Stockport and Barnsley is hilly, especially near Woodhead, and not all sections or barriers are accessible for users of wheelchairs or non-standard cycles. Barrow Hill Roundhouse, until 1948 known as Staveley Engine Shed, is a former Midland Railway roundhouse in Barrow Hill, near Staveley and Chesterfield, Derbyshire (), now serving as a railway heritage centre. History Staveley Roundhouse was built to a standard Midland Railway square shed design in 1870 with a central turntable under cover. British Railways shed codes were used to identify the engine sheds that its locomotives and multiple units were allocated to for maintenance purposes. The former London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) alpha-numeric system was extended to cover all regions and used until replaced by alphabetic codes in 1973. System of codes The coding system had its origins in a reorganisation of locomotive operation and maintenance on the LMS in the 1933-35 period. It grouped all sheds into districts with a main shed, given the district number followed by the letter A as its code, and subsidiary sheds with the same number followed by B, C, or D etc. Many sheds were also responsible for sub-sheds where day-to-day servicing could be carried out but which lacked the facilities for intermediate or heavy overhauls. The motive power depot (MPD) or locomotive depot, or traction maintenance depot (TMD), is the place where locomotives are usually housed, repaired and maintained when not being used. They were originally known as "running sheds", "engine sheds" or, for short, just sheds. Midland Railway
The Midland Railway (MR) was a railway company in the United Kingdom from 1844. The Midland was one of the largest railway companies in Britain in the early 20th century, and the largest employer in Derby, where it had its headquarters.
