State Epidemiologist (Sweden)
The state epidemiologist, or the chief epidemiologist (plural: ''state epidemiologists'' or ''chief epidemiologists'', sv, statsepidemiolog) is a Swedish civil servant. The current state epidemiologist is Anders Tegnell, with Anders Wallensten as deputy state epidemiologist. Initially, the state epidemiologist was the head of the epidemiology department at the State Bacteriological Laboratory at the time of its establishment in 1955. In 1993, the post was transferred to the newly founded agency Institute for Communicable Disease Control. After the Institute was merged with Swedish National Institute of Public Health in 2014, the post became part of the new agency, the Public Health Agency of Sweden. The Public Health Agency of Sweden ( sv, Folkhälsomyndigheten, abbreviated ''Fohm'') is a Swedish government agency with national responsibility for public health. It falls under the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs and works to promote public health and to prevent illness and injuries through education. It monitors the health of the population, infectious disease control measures, and public health interventions, and assists the Government in its decision-making process by providing facts and knowledge. Anders Tegnell
Nils Anders Tegnell (born 17 April 1956) is a Swedish civil servant and physician specialising in infectious disease. From 2013 until his resignation in March 2022 he was Sweden's state epidemiologist. Tegnell has had key roles in the Swedish response to the 2009 swine flu pandemic and the COVID-19 pandemic. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he became a divisive figure in Sweden and internationally due to his and the Public Health Agency of Sweden's opposition to lockdowns, travel restrictions and face masks for general use, which were widely adopted in many countries to curb the spread of the virus, as well as for his leading role in Sweden's controversial approach. Solna Municipality ( sv, Solna kommun or , ) is a municipality in Stockholm County in Sweden, located just north of Stockholm City Centre. Its seat is located in the town of Solna, which is a part of the Stockholm urban area. Solna is one of the richest municipalities in Sweden. The municipality is a part of Metropolitan Stockholm. Annika Linde
Gerda Annika Linde (born 26 February 1948) is a Swedish physician, virologist and retired civil servant. From 2005 to 2013 she served as State Epidemiologist at the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control. Biography Linde was born in Skövde and grew up there. She was inspired by the novel ''Exodus'' by Leon Uris to study medicine. She enrolled at Gothenburg University in 1968, studying medicine and sociology, obtaining a medical degree in 1974. After her internship at Danderyd Hospital she went on to work as an infectious disease specialist at the presently defunct Roslagstull Hospital in Stockholm. In 1979 she started working at the virological department at the Swedish National Bacteriological Laboratory, and completed her PhD in Clinical Virology in 1987. Anders Theodor Wallensten (born 22 January 1974 in Stockholm) is a Swedish physician and epidemiologist. He is the son of Richard Wallensten and Kerstin Uvnäs Moberg, both physicians. Johan Giesecke
Johan Giesecke (born 9 September 1949) is a Swedish physician and Professor Emeritus at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Giesecke was born in Stockholm. He defended his thesis, ''On The Molecular Structure Of Dopaminergic Substances'', at the Karolinska Institute. He trained as an infectious disease clinician and worked with AIDS patients during the 1980s. Giesecke received an MSc in epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1992, after which he worked as a Senior Lecturer at the school. From 1995 to 2005, Giesecke served as state epidemiologist of Sweden. The Swedish health care system is mainly government-funded, universal for all citizens and decentralized, although private health care also exists.
