Start – Socialist Internationalist Organisation ( el, Ξεκίνημα – Σοσιαλιστική Διεθνιστική Οργάνωση, ''Xekínima – Sosialistiké Diethnistikí Orgánosi'') is a political party in Greece. It was the Greek section of the Trotskyist International Socialist Alternative (ISA) until 24 June 2021. Origin The Socialist Internationalist Organization began in the mid-1970s, when Greek society was experiencing major political upheavals. Greece appeared to be moving to left-radical policies following the collapse of the military dictatorship. The initial members came from within the mass workers’ parties, which were the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and Communist Party of Greece (KKE). This group was made up of activists who thought that these parties' policies were misleading the masses. They adopted the ideas of Leon Trotsky. A hunger strike is a method of non-violent resistance in which participants fast as an act of political protest, or to provoke a feeling of guilt in others, usually with the objective to achieve a specific goal, such as a policy change. Most hunger strikers will take liquids but not solid food. In cases where an entity (usually the state) has or is able to obtain custody of the hunger striker (such as a prisoner), the hunger strike is often terminated by the custodial entity through the use of force-feeding. Popular Unity ( el, Λαϊκή Ενότητα (ΛΑΕ), ''Laïkí Enótita'', LAE) is a left-wing political party in Greece. The Committee for a Workers' International (CWI) was an international association of Trotskyist political parties. Today, two groups claim to be the continuation of the CWI. History Founding The origins of the CWI can be traced to a group of British trotskyists which were expelled from the USFI in 1965, after disagreements regarding the Colonial Revolution, Gurrilerism, Studentism and the post war boom. But it is not till 1974 that they set about building an international. The founding conference of the CWI was held in London on 20 to 21 April 1974 and attended by supporters of what was then called Militant (or the Militant tendency), from 12 countries including Britain, Ireland and Sweden. January 2015 Greek Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in Greece on Sunday 25 January 2015 to elect all 300 members to the Hellenic Parliament in accordance with the constitution. The election was held earlier than scheduled due to the failure of the Greek parliament to elect a new president on 29 December 2014. Syriza won a legislative election for the first time, winning 36% of votes and 149 seats, just two short of an absolute majority. The centre-right New Democracy (ND), the outgoing party of government, saw only a small decline from 30% to 28%, but in falling to second place suffered its worst showing to date in terms of seats. May 2012 Greek Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in Greece on Sunday, 6 May 2012 to elect all 300 members to the Hellenic Parliament. It was regular scheduled to be held in late 2013, four years after the previous election; however, an early election was stipulated in the coalition agreement of November 2011 which formed the Papademos Cabinet. The coalition comprised both of Greece's traditional major political parties, PASOK on the left and New Democracy (ND) on the right, as well as the right-wing Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS). The aim of the coalition was to relieve the Greek government-debt crisis by ratifying and implementing decisions taken with other Eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) a month earlier.
